Hamburg Mattenfilter

Hmmm maybe I will have to give that a try again. We have one which we picked up when we were running a bunch of fry tanks but I always thought it was loud. Maybe we just weren't running it near enough to capacity.

More tanks is always the answer lol

Anybody ever run a combo mattenfilter/algae scrubber? Seems like the space behind the porret foam would be a good space to deliberately grow algae.

Would their be any benefit to this type of setup?

I have been considering it in one of our tanks. Would make a lot of sense as it should reduce nitrates.

I have checked out this tank several times in the past few days but neglected to compliment you for the awesome setup! One quick question. Is the foam stable or is it easily moved by the fish?

The foam is stable. The fish can't move it. If you look at the pics on my first post, you can see how the foam is held in place. Thanks for the compliment!

Andrew, I'd like to revive this thread to ask how far out from the corner did you silicone the plastic edge guard? Are you happy with it, or would you recommend a different placement now that you've had it up and running for a bit?

I'm getting ready to reseal my recently acquired 100 from Sam and plan to set it up like yours.

I siliconed the guards 8 inches from the corner and used two inch foam. The space between corner and foam is accomodating a heater and a mj1200 powerhead. I removed and rinsed the foam about six weeks ago as it appeared to clog. I used wood to mask the foam and am overall pleased.

I also put a mattenfilter into my 40b planted tank. I used one inch foam and placed the foam 9 inches from the corner thinking I would need the extra space for a co2 reactor. Currently, the space houses a heater and intake to my canister filter. I like that the foam serves as a giant prefilter, as plant debris would otherwise clog the filter strainer.

Question of Curiosity- why would you choose this filtering system over canister, HOB's or sponge filters? I think I understand the concept- water is drawn through filter material providing mechanical and biological filtration.

Superior filtration? Aesthetics? Cost of purchase/install? Cost of operation?

Planning my 75 gallon tank and trying to become educated with the best options...

I have this same setup on my 75 with two corners as the filters and two pumps drawing the water through... It works amazingly..... Water is clearer and clears up faster than with any other filter I've had on the tank. At one point I had two emperor 400s on the tank... I also stuffed behind the filters with a heater and loss of bio media. On the down side if I want to clean the filters I will have to practically break the tank down to do so.

It has been running for 3 months now no issues.

I find that Mattenfilters provide a ton of biological filtration. They're great for small tanks (they can be just air-driven). For the larger tanks, I think it's more a matter of preference. They're great for hiding equipment behind (aesthetics), and in my case, I won't have anywhere to put a canister once I get the tank set up.

My 75 has a sponge filter in addition to the matten filter. I did this mostly so in the event of a power outage, I can connect a battery operated pump to the sponge and keep a well seeded filter running. I don't know if it is superior to a HOB or large canister, just different. One main difference is that with the matten filter, the tank can sit flush against the wall (not that mine do).
