Theer's sweet poison and then there's Grappa....

...whose name sounds remarkably like it tastes and the sounds that revelers frequently make after imbibing too much (anything more than a thimbleful). Arguably the most vile stuff masquerading as recreational beverage on the planet, would take a whole lot of honey to make it right, and even then...

Given that it's made from the pulp, stems, seeds and whatever else is left after the grapes are squeezed and robbed of their juice to make wine, it's to alcoholic drinks what bologna or hot dogs are to carnivorism and should be sold with a day-after chelation regimen. But hey, each to thine own. On an aside, am very gratified to learn that CCA's poster child has at least one vice and why your beloved has you on a such a short leash the other 50 weeks of the year.

I much prefer a nice bottle of Uruguayan Tannat...and Canelones (where Felipe lives) has several amazing vinyards. We sampled the goods of a few on the trip!

I'm not usually a fan of Grappa, but the Grappamiel is amazingly smooth and (at least for me) did not result in uncomfortable residual effects on the head  I wouldn't recommend drinking an entire bottle, though.

It's no suprise that Uruguayans are able to turn something nasty into something wonderful. They do it on their parillas everyday ;)

Matt

The otos have the (salt and pepper with green blotches) pattern of the cories...and even school with them. Too cool!

I brought back about a dozen of the cory cats from Laguna de Arnaud (lagoon off of the Rio Olimar) and I think three of the mimics.

Matt

I'm intrigued by the corys and the oto mimics.

I here tell that one scores even more points if there's a nasal component as well...timing is everything.

Keep me in mind, should you decide they're not for you (for whatever reason)...

(As a CCA member, I really should get more involved with cichlids)

Looks like it. I'd imagine that the mimic oto's are location-specific (like the cories).

There are lots of Corydoras cf. paleatus in Uruguay.... meaning that they're kind of like Cory. paleatus but not exactly. We found cories lots of places but only found the mimics in Laguna de Arnaud, which is a lagoon (kind of like an Oxbow lake) of the Rio Olimar (outside of the lovely town of Treinta y Tres, Uruguay).

I tried to take pics of the catfish (among others) at each location because there is so much difference between fish (of the same "species") between one location and another in Uruguay.

Aargh! Was going to pm you so as not to derail this thread, but I don't know how to turn on my pm option.

So we had some Grappamiel after collecting these guys in Laguna de Arnaud near Treinta y Tres (from the hotel where I started this thread).

Back on the rails :)

Hey Matt, sounds like you had a great time. I'm happy you made it back safe and sound from your trip. I am sure your kids missed you tremendously. It was good to see you on Saturday as well.

Let's get together for some beer n wings so I can hear all about your adventures in good old Uruguay.
