You can also have any wild bettas...

We were on the road within 90 minutes of my plane touching down!

Matt

Sounds like you really hit the ground running... only been there for a day and already hit up a bunch of cool spots. Good for you, Matty.

Like I said, I have dibs on any native mbuna you may find down there. ;)

Be safe and have fun.

I'm back (left Montevideo at 9:10 PM...arrived Miami at 5:50 AM...and DC at noon)...and brought three suitcases of fish and lots of pictures and memories. Some bug bites and scratches from the native flora as well.

Didn't lose a single fish (knock on wood) coming back!

I (hope to) foresee an upcoming presentation on collecting in Uruguay. Do tell what you brought back, 3 suitcases should hold a good number of fish.

Thanks everyone - in addition to fish, I brought back 5 bottles of Grappmiel, which is an Uruguayan liqueur made with grappa and honey. Num num!

The fish:

- (I hope bredding) Groups of Gymnogeo. gymnogenys, labiatus and rhabdotus-types
- Some chanchitos
- Some undescribed Geo. brasiliensis-types from Molle
- Some pikes (scotti, an undescribed blue/green saxatallis-type and some really nice punctatus pairs
- An acara male for the females that I have
- Some catfish (eel cats, a sand cat, some Ancistrus from Aguas Blancas, some undescribed Golden Hisonotus from India Muerta, some Cory cats from Laguna Arnaud and some of the Otos that mimic them)
- Some livebearers (Cnestrodon, Jenynsia, Phalloceros)
- Some freshwater crabs (2 that I found together and another that's I think different)
- Some tetras (Astyanax laticeps, a baby undescribed Hoplias, some others)

So far only lost one tetra and one baby chanchito that got beat up in the bag. We took really good care of the fish on the trip (lots of water changing), were pretty good about not taking too many fish (put bunches back before we left) and bagged well (oxygen, not too little water, etc.).

Yes - I think 12 of the ones from Aguas Blancas. Here's a pic of a bigger one (female because her nose isn't bristly) of that type (from last trip).

We also collected Ancistrus from the Rio Olimar (little guys with yellow on their tails), some Hypostomus, Rhinoloricaria, whip tails (from the Arroyo Viagia) and some others. I don't think I brought any of those back, though..

What's funny is that I tried (and tried again) to find Grappamiel in the US. It's just not available. Even the Duty Free at the airport in Montevideo (which is new and really nice) doesn't carry it.

In Uruguay, on the other hand, it's one of the least expensive things in the liquor store because it's made in Uruguay and doesn't have import duties.

My wife liked it last time we went...so her only request in exchange for me being away for a week was for 5 bottles... which I brought more!
