Black Calvus spawn!

I've been offering them a "calvus cave" and some other Calvus-friendly shells....mainly so that the female can hide from the male. There's an enormous size difference in this pair and he killed the original female that I bought him with.

The other day, just for the heck of it, I threw in a pleco cave that I figured the L. leleupi might like. A day or so later, I saw her going in and out of it while doing a "look at me" dance in front of the male. Another two days, and she's guarding eggs and I have wigglers today! I seriously didn't expect them to spawn....as I mentioned, there are leleupi in the tank as well as a very gregarious group of Mbipia and a bunch of Syno lucipinnis.

I think I'll pull her brood into a breeder box tonight just in case. I've seen her straying away for long stretches of time today.

For God's sake Christine, is there anything that doesn't procreate in your household? I swear, is it more than a day that goes by that you aren't posting another spawn? I think there may be more than a few barren couples that may want to spend a few days in your home, or simply have a glass of water:D Congrates if it all comes to fruition. :happy0158:

Thanks, they're still doing ok....they haven't finished absorbing their yolk sacs yet, but they aren't all stuck together in one giant blob in the corner anymore, either.

Congrats! Please take notes for us on what you are doing, what you feed, etc. as this progresses.
I have had a very bad time keeping calvus fry alive. I got a new Marina box in the hopes of getting some to survive with this "new" method. Maybe you can develop a new CCA-calvus-protocol...;)

So the original batch of eggs didn't make it (totally my mistake) but I noticed that she spawned again this weekend....this time she's being a bit more lax about guarding the eggs and is hanging out right outside the cave entrance, rather than laying in there with them like last time. I hope she's fanning them occasionally!

I just got three calvus from Travis on Sunday and searching the forum to see if anyone got his/her calvus to spawn and found this thread. Looks like I will need to provide a cave or something similar. The fish are in my 265G. I currently have two large lace rock piles but they are occupied by several generations of Brichardis.

Yes, definitely need a cave. you MIGHT be able to arrange the rocks in a way that they like but it's a long shot.

I find that if the female doesn't fit into a pleco cave, she might choose a large shell instead. My Comps will spawn in a SCC calvus cave but only if it's laying on its side horizontally.

Thanks, Christine. I don't really breed fish, but thought it would be cool to see if the Calvus would breed and have a few surviving fry here and there.
