Why is my water yellow???

I believe the yellow was there before I put the wood in there. I just did not have the lights on top at that point. But when I got in, I put the wood in, then put the light on. That would have to be a world record in turning 125 gallons of water yellow on a piece of driftwood. I'm not saying it has not contributed by now... its been in there quite a while now. But since it had the yellow look as I put the wood in the tank, it is hard for me to believe it's just the wood.

I concur on it being the wood. I redid my 120 and added driftwood and within a day or two the water had the same off yellow tint from the tannins in the driftwood.

I think its your affiliation with the Steelers. The Steeler "yellow" is creeping into your tank :p.

Now thats an easy fix. support the Redskins and you will have nice beautiful burgundy water. :D

Not only would my water be burgundy... which would be even HARDER to see in... but how could I root for a team that rarely makes the playoffs, and hasn't played in a Super Bowl in oh... what is it now... 19 years or so?

I think I'll keep the yellow water! :p

I have seen a peice of wood turn a 180 yellow in five minutes. The problem is the wood was never soaked or boiled by the collector (from my understanding). You could empty and refil the tank 3, 4, or 5 times or even more and it could still tint the tank. Sucks dude. I would return the wood. I am however getting a kick out of all of the comments here LOL.

PLEASE do not do the burgundy thing. After reading all this stuff I think your only chance to solve this problem is to try another forum with smarter people. Or maybe take out the wood?

Nah, another forum might be your best bet.

In the mean time, want a cheap 75 gallon tank that is gauranteed not to yellow? I always use bleach. Give me a shout.

LOL... shoot, man... I did want one of those 75s, but I was on call last weekend, and there was no way I could make it all the way out to Reston under those circumstances, unfortunately. Due to my work schedule, my next chance at making it out to Reston would not have been until this coming Saturday.

Those deals were so good, I am fairly surprised you'd even have anything left! Thanks though, George... I hope you get everything moved within a timeframe you need them gone!

so did you tried taking the wood out?
i would do that, do a 75% water change and add new carbon to the filter. wait a few days and do another massive change. if its not clear by then then is not the wood.....
btw, remember the pleco you gave me long ago? what was it called, she its so pretty! i want a boy =D

Nah... I decided perhaps you guys are correct. I checked the params, and everything including the fish are fine. I like the wood enough to deal with the tint, so I decided to leave well enough alone for now. I did drop some carbon in the sump though, and it did improve it some.
