Want to Borrow: Diatom Filter

I have a system 1 diatom filter with diatom earth you can borrow. I've used my filter only handful of times when I was fighting green water in my tanks a few years ago. It worked great. Haven't used it in over 3 or 4 years I am sure. I am in Vienna, so it might be a hike, but let me know if you want to give it a try.

I have a good bit of past experience with water clarifiers. Acurel is the only one I've ever seen work and it's very reliable ime. Don't have personal experience with plant soil substrate but I've seen planted tank people say Acurel worked for them. Water clarifiers can cause temporary elevated breathing in fish, similar to Melafix. It may vary somewhat with dosage, but is relatively mild, and doesn't last long or damage fish, even when used regularly as I used to do (as in every water change, something I used to do to deal with silt in my well water, now I just have better mechanical filtration).

Besides a diatom filter, a HOT Magnum with a micron cartridge works ime, though you might have to rinse the cartridge a few times as it clogs up (or may even have to change it eventually). I have a HOT Magnum I've had many years, but doesn't do you much good, considering I'm a few hours away from you. But, by now maybe you've got it squared away anyway...?

What is an HOT Magnum?

He ended up contacting Jeff, following his advice to a T, and I got photos of the clear and planted tank yesterday :)!

H(ang) O(n) T(ank) Magnum... one of these :)

Great little filters ime, have had my current one close to 20 years. Handy as an extra filter to move around wherever you need it or for smaller tanks-- I've had one on lightly to moderately stocked 50 and 55 gal tanks or two of them handle a moderately stocked 75 gal nicely ime-- or use with their micron cartridge to clear up after adding new sand, or for extra surface current, etc. No plumbing to do to set them up. The main downside about them imo is smallish media capacity. I have mine half filled with bio media (Eheim) and half with filter padding.
