Video Flip Cam?

So I was watching two 1.5" lethrinops flare and mouth at eachother the other night and really wished I had one of those new-fangled digital video cameras to catch the action. (It was funny as hell)

Right now, I have my 5 yr-old point-and-shoot digital camera or my Blackberry... both take pretty crappy video.

In the past I've spent extra money on the newest, high-end camcorders, etc and always had the technology change or become outdated before I got the thing home out of the box.

Not looking to spend a ton on the best, just looking for something decent.

Any suggestions? $100-$150 would be nice.

Good question...

Check out the JVC Everio 30 GB Hybrid Micro Hard Disk Drive Video Camera.
It's small and you can record a ton of hours on it's hard drive then dump it on your desktop for editing purposes, plus it's all digital video.

It's not HD, but if I were you I would invest a little bit more on that Feature.

Tony, I got my in-laws the Flip video for Christmas, and they love it. Super easy to use, impressively decent quality video, and reasonably priced. The models have changed somewhat since Christmas, but you can get the Ultra for about $150, and the ultraHD for about $200.

Tony - The videos I showed at the March meeting were taken with the new Kodak Zi8 - it has a closeup feature - I should try it in the fishroom. Ratings place it higher than the Flip and it is cheaper too (less than $150). I also found a source for a Sony OEM stereo microphone that knocked over $60 off the suggested retail price - I think I paid $8.35 plus shipping. One shortcoming to the Zi8 is that it does not come with a memory card. Camera is HD with 1080(p-i?) and down.

Drop by sometime if you'd like to check it out.

Rich - Looking for something a bit smaller. I like the idea of throwing one of these flips in my jacket pocket and forgetting it's there.

Chris - Maria and I looked at the Flip website last night.... seems like they are the "iPods" of the digital video recorder world. Sort of like the standard everyone is chasing.

Mike - I'll check those out. Getting an equivalent product for less money is always nice. :)

Thanks a ton, guys. :happy0144:

I discovered the Flip last fall and I bought 2 for $150 to use with my students at school. The students love it. It is super easy to use and it comes pre-programmed with editing software(if you need it). The only knock against it, imo, was that it doesn't take single shots. You have to edit them with the computer which can be more time consuming than necessary. Sam's club has them for $119 and there are sweet deals on the net.
