WI is nice..... I went in July many years ago and have gone in the winter as well. We went far north to visit some of his family. Stayed on a lake, went boating, fishing, etc.... very different culture the father north you go. It can also get down right COLD in July if you go north. Not my thing... I like warmth.

I liked it.... but, I like NC banks or The Thousand Islands better ;) NC can get hot... but if you are on the banks there is always a wind.

+1 on Thousand Islands. I went when I was 10. We went to Alexandria Bay for a while then went to the 'North Pole' in the Adirondaks. Its a year round Christmas themed fun park. They have snow all summer! I feel like its near Saranac Lake but I can't remember. While we were at 1000 Islands we went to Bolt Castle and other places. I remember fishing on a boat slip late one evening and a school of Sturgeon swam underneath me. Scared the crap outta me! Their backs broke the surface and I could see all the details of their bodies. They looked like 5 monsters! :)

1000 Islands is not far from the Sterling Rennaisance Festival, it would be on the way.

If you head up to the Adirondaks, there are cool lakes to check out.

Richard suggested the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas, its a great place to go. We honeymooned there. But everything there is a la cart. You can stay across Paradise Island at the Harbor Island Resort which is all inclusive! You could walk over to Atlantis and see what you want. Great trip!

Thanks everyone-lots of good ideas, and some I didn't think of (1000 Islands, for example). One of the reasons I was thinking Virginia Beack is its close proximity to a lot of the other places mentioned - Newport News, Williamsburg, Outer Banks - so day trips from VB as a base of operations would be quite manageable.

We've done Maine and Acadia NP in August-very nice, but you know, I don't think the water in Maine is ever warm!!!! The water at the beach we went to was 58F. I think I would do that again, but in the fall or spring and skip the water.

I was considering Niagara Falls too, but not really sure a whole week could be spent there, especially since I've been there about 10 times already. But almost all of those were pre-child.

My brother has a cabin on a lake in Wisconsin, just across the river from Iron Mountain, MI. OMG heaven on earth all summer.

The Dells is cool but soo touristy. If you got a tourism place (as in local chamber of commerce) in Wisconsin they could find you a nice cabin on a lake with a beach and fantastic fishing. Anyone who gave you something south of the Mason-Dixon line has no idea what you were talking about and very limited knowledge of the world.

Last year I went to the ACA in Milwaukee and then on to Wisconsin's Door County to visit my favorite in-laws. By the way, camping in Door County is top notch. We caught King Salmon in Sturgeon Bay and it was the most comfortable I was ALL last summer. When these folks are hot, it means it is 80. Go TO WISCONSIN. I promise you won't be sorry.

Catch me some Blue Gills.

I'm considering Niagra Falls again. My kid was too young to remember it.

.

Sand Beach in Acadia....LMAO, that water is ALWAYS ice cold.

I would go along with the Outer Banks, but how about Myrtle Beach, SC?

If you do decide to go to the 1000 island area, you can either go to the US side or the Canada side. If you don't have passports obviously you'll have to stay on the US side. But I will say this, the Canada side is SO much nicer. The US side has more people and is more commericial. The castle is stunning and has been redone.... the fishing up there is great ( from what we heard )... we went SCUBA diving instead.

If you do decide on 1,000 islands. I'll give you the name of a great place to stay up there right on the water. Very casual... while they have a formal dining room, you can also bring your portable grill and cook your food out by the water. Very relaxed place and down to earth. Bu then again, everyone up there was like that!!!

hmmmm Myrtle beach?

OK IMO very tourist heavy UNLESS you stay on the north side. Great place for good food and golfers. I hated south myrtle beach but I love north mytle beach!!

The banks still get my vote!!

For the past 25 years I have looked into going to the Outer Banks, but still haven't pulled the trigger.
Probably one day.

Joel, shot in the dark but...
Go up to Bar Harbor and take The Cat into Nova Scotia. There are other ferries that go to different places as well once you are in NS.

I'll look into Nova Scotia. It seems to me that if the water in Maine is cold, then the water in NS would be cold too!

PEI is a place I have always wanted to go.
There are also cruise lines that leave out of NJ (Bayonne, NJ :D) that go up to Canada as well.
How about whale watching?
