approx. 8.50am Sept 12, 2007 several rouge fry broke away from the pack and ventured out into the great beyond.

Hopefully they figure out there's no food there! Orange discus are a pain to raise.

Just call me "Big Daddy" :D

Ha! Okay Big Daddy -- congrats on the fry! I love watching discus fry and seeing them just swarm on the parents. Good luck with them!

VERY nice! Thanks for the picture! Have they attached to the parents yet?

the fry will attach for a brief snack and wander off for a while; the parents follow them around and seem to be encouraging them. I put some BBS and Cyclopeeze in the tank but - OPPS - as orange as the parents! The walls of the tank are covered in white paper but the bottom of the tank gives a perfect reflection; remember for next time. Still, its good to see the parents go down to the bottom, stir up the fry with their fins, and get a few at a time to attach. I think I'll move all my red and orange pairs into 29's; 38 cubes are too big. Still not bad for a new pair.

Congratulations Big Daddy! Why are you feeding them? Are they older than 2 wks? Or do you find it something you must do because of the orange parents?

Hi!

They went free swimming on September 9th, about three hours before I took that pic... Which would be free swimming at about 8 am or so.

We feed them because of the orange parents, they don't attach too well.

First, I must teach Amanda how to read a calender. As to the feeding: (a) the water is Way too hard (the solution to this problem is in boxes on my dining room table) (b) the parents don't seem to have any excess slime coat Thus: © the fry will go to the parents for a second or two, and then leave to look for food (my theory). Gone through this before. When the water supply is fixed - this weekend - I think the slime coat problem will go away. Besides, they'll spawn again in a couple of weeks. Great parenting though; esp from a new pair.

Be nice. I'd had a long day, and was tired. And 3 days isn't all that much of a difference..... Yes, they went free swimming at about 8 am on the 12th, Wednesday, not the 9th, Sunday.

Later!

Saturday, September 15 - sometime in the afternoon: The fry finally decided to attach to parents, they still wander off a bit but generally remain near mom & dad.

Ah - that's great news Paul! Will you be switching them to BBS soon?[/b]

Thanks for reminding me!! I'm in the process of setting up 7 new tanks, moving 6 more, building new air supply infrastructure, assembling my new water treatment plant, preparing for the arrival Tuesday am of 28 wilds (Geos, Discus, Pikes), designing my new fish room, and yeah - I have a cognitive psych exam Friday; I should probably start reading the text while the BBS hatch out. Beer anyone???

Big Daddy

Heee heee! Sounds like you're going to have a busy week. If you can keep all that straight, you should do fine on the cognative exam! :happy0144:

I haven't had any discus fry in quite awhile now, but if the fry weren't swarming the parents as they should, I used to start them on BBS earlier. Lowering the water helped alot too - less chance of the fry missing the parents in their quest for food I guess. I always liked the 29s for discus breeding too.

Designing a fish room can be a joy and a challange. Best part is when you have it all done and filled with fish and know that it all came together right and works like you want it to. After that, there's just popping open that beer and kicking your feet up and enjoy watching them - until you realize you forgot to set up the grow-out tanks for all those discus fry! Ha!

You mean that it actually might work??

P.S. you are welcome to the cog. exam Friday. I don't think that I will be able to think by then!!

I'm home sick today with a stomach bug, so I decided to try to get new pics of the fry. But between the fish (who were being a bit shy) and the lighting (which was a bit low) and the camera (which was being more temperamental then usual) I was unable to get any. I will try again!

But the fry have grown significantly. We seem to have between 10 and 20 at the moment. Their're at that stage where they are starting to look more like discus then tadpoles.
