Further if not definitive proof....

+1 on an overdose of manufactured drama in that show.

I like reality shows. In the same flavor of reality, Sons of Guns, Hardcore Pawn and Pawn Stars come to mind. Of those three shows, yes, there is manufactured drama. But, a little bit goes a long way.

In the case of Tanked, it's a bit over the top. Hopefully, they'll turn it down about three clicks on future episodes.

Other than that though (as well as their obsession with saltwater-only setups*) it's a good watch.

*Yes I understand that half of their business probably comes from tank maintenance contracts and salt tanks require more maintenance, but who else thought that the phone booth tank would have been much cooler with about 50-60 mbuna?

Yeah,
but remember that most of their customers are trying to show off their money.
You and I could not afford most of those tanks.

I saw the phone booth episode and would not watch the show again. It was pretty lame.

Salt water can cost plenty if you insist on doing inverts but fish only tanks can be resonable and fun. There are actually quite a few salt water fish that are being bred and raised now in captivity without specialized equipment. It is where I plan to go if I can ever get out of here.

Yeah the quarantine system was 30K. It was nice, but there wasn't anything terribly special about it.

Watched another episode last night - one with a 7' wide acrylic cylinder with rays in it. Unfortunately, the zany antics of family seem to have become more the focus of the show than they were in the phone booth episode, but I digress....

Anyone else wonder what that kid's new business was or how long it would take him to go out of business?

I know the first thing I'd do when opening up a new business would be setting up a $50K-$75K custom tank on hydraulics.....

It's Vegas baby.
Money is no object.

LOL
The personalization in the show is the only way it could have appeal to the masses. they all have it.
The Swamp loggers dont just cut down trees, you see the families,
The Crab guys fight,
Pawn stars are always picking on Chum
Etc.
If is was a straight build the tank, it would be one episode and over with. No commercial value at that point.

Is it overboard? Yes.
But I still like it. But then again, I am nuts anyway.

I like it just because its an aquarium show. Start counting how many are out there? Yeah....didnt get very far with that. The show itself is alright but mainly because we are hobbyist. I think the average joe or animal planet viewer probably likes it.

Im actually not wild about any of the setups on the show so far. Then again im not into themed things.

Too funny...I'd bet that the people who agree to be part of the show get a big discount.

I gotta agree with Pat, though. Perhaps the show will increase in substance a bit as time goes on...but they've got the get past the first season...

Good stuff - thanks for the link!

While I think that some people will believe that the show promotes the myth of the "instant aquarium", I think others will think that the moral of the story is that keeping fish is too hard for amateurs (i.e. that professionals are needed to set things up, choose the right fish and maintain the whole thing).

When I had an aquarium cleaning business (back in high school), I was amazed that people would pay me good money to set things up, do water changes, clean the glass, etc. People treated me as if I were some sort of magician...instead of just a dude with a Python, scrubby pad and some dechlor.

The more that aquarium keeping is de-mystified, the less the need there is for expensive service contracts...

TANKED perpetuates the mythology (to their financial reward, of course).

I WONDER WHAT THEIR FEES ARE CUZ THEY HOP ON PLANES TO GO HAND PICK FISH FOR THEIR CLIENTS ON THE REGULAR. I WAS SHOCKED AT THE ICE CUBES IN THE TANK EPISODE BUT I TRIED TO KEEP IN MIND WHAT I SAW WAS BITS AND PIECES OF SOME MASTERFUL EDITING. ALL IN ALL I LIKE THE SHOW CUZ ITS THE ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND. I ALSO MIGHT SEE SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA. LIKE THE FEEDING TUBES THEY USE....AWESOME.

I'll bet you that feeding tube install was a thousand dollar deal.

Let me back up a bit and say that I do like the show. I think that it will help in building interest in the hobby. Anything that does that imo, is a good thing.

Wayde and his wife need to chill a bit though.... that's my only real gripe. :)

I THINK SHE NEEDS TO CHILL ITS LIKE EPISODE 4 AND SHE IS GRIPING HE NEEDS TO PLAN HIS "QT" WITH HER BETTER. EXCUSE ME BUT DIDNT THEY RUN INTO PROBLEMS UNFORSEEN IN A MILLION DOLLAR HOME AND 3" OF WATER RAN ON THE FLOOR. THE MAN IS ABOUT HIS BUSINESS AND MAKING MONEY NOT TO MENTION HE HAS TO DO THIS SHOW. MAYBE SHE DOESNT REALIZE THAT WITH THE SHOW COMES EXPOSURE AND MORE CLIENTS WHICH WILL MEAN HUBBY WILL BE BUSY FOR SURE. SHE NEEDS TO LIGHTEN UP. NOT LIKE HE IS GOOFING AROUND.:p
