Purigen?

Came across a deal on e-bay, $12 for 250 ml, and got to wondering exactly what it's good for, and how effective it is? Does anyone use it? The only time I've run across it on a forum was on plecofanatics. Someone from Oz had posted that they knew someone who bred zebra pleco's, and used a canister filter filled with purigen on the breeding tank.

I've used it. I bought to see if it would improve the water clarity. It did turn brown after a while, so it was doing something, but I did not really notice improvement in water clarity. I am too lazy to re-gen so I stopped using after I ran out. But I have the used Purigen saved, so may be I will regen and use it again.

I have 250ml in the sump of my 125 and it def did help with my waters clarity but it didn't live to the crystal clear hype.

I agree it works but maybe not as much as its hyped.

I really like it as its rechargeable. I use it in my big boy tanks (the 230g). I also will use a pinch when shipping (similar to using a piece of polyfilter). It is great at removing staining or odor/discoloration from water. You can dilute bleach it to "clean" it and reuse.

I've thought about using it a couple times...but knew that I'd never get around to re-charging it.

I use Polyfilter, which isn't re-chargeable, but works really well.

My water is crystal clear with the water changes, I used it once and yes it turned brown but didnt notice a great difference when I used it. Have 3 or 4 that need recharge but like others no need too.

I use it and think it helps the water quality. Recharging isn't that bad, because you should only have to do it every few months. Just requires chlorine bleach and Prime.

I don't have any problems with water clarity, I overfilter everything. I'm just wondering whether it would actually be beneficial for keeping more sensitive, delicate, or otherwise demanding critters healthy and happy.
I had a couple tanks with shrimp and dwarf crayfish going well, but for some unknown reason they all stopped breeding and died off a couple years go. I'm thinking it must have been something in the tap water. More recently I found the same thing with an experimental handful of cherry shrimp. Oddly, the mts also disappeared from several tanks as well, but the ramshorns weren't affected.

have you tested your water for copper? There are medias that will remove copper safely if its turns out that is your issue. Polyfilter turns red in the presence of copper and would be an easy way to see if that is your issue. Another option is cuprisorb, whichi s made by seachem.
