Predator Question

Well, the main fish with the issue is not a cichlid... its a knifefish... but since my cichlids are certainly gonna eat what he eats, I figured I post this here.

It has been some time since I had any predatory fish. I understand that buying feeders from your local petsmart is, um... less than desirable. As it is, this clown knife simply will not take any prepared foods.

I will soon have a 33 gallon tank setup to breed and grow live foods. However, probably 1 1/2 to 2 weeks out from that. In the meantime, how badly would I be playing russion roulette, if I went and grabbed some feeders from petsmart a couple times until then, so the big guy can eat? And if it is a major no-no... suggestions?

Do you go anywhere near an lfs other than a big box store? I feed my needle fish with guppies from PetSmart with no issues... side note here... you *really* need a well fitting lid with needle fish and *don't* let your bro-in-law take care of fishies like that...

sigh they were cool fish.

Sadly, no. Waldorf lost its last "LFS" several years ago now. Petsmart, Petco, and Walmart... the big box stores... is all we have left.

And to make matters worse... the Petsmart near me only had the different sized goldfish feeders... no guppies.

On the one hand, I fear doing it. On the other, the big guy's gotta eat. And flakes, pellets, frozen bloodworms and beefheart ain't cuttin' it with him.

Have you tried earthworms or crickets?
At the risk of sounding um... like a punk... I don't do insects. Exactly why I don't keep lizards. And why I rue the day the stinkbug got loose in Pennsylvania.

There is not place around here, that I am aware of, that I can buy earthworms... and I have not seen any make an appearance as of yet this season, by my house, anyway.

Yeah, we had to do the goldfish feeders, too. The needle fish really needed the smaller ones... I think the clerks all scattered like the wind when we came in! lol We were *very* picky about the size.

I think I'm gonna take the chance. The big guy needs some food. If I can get by just once or twice, I'll have the 33 ready to go, and can get a colony of guppies or endlers or some "breed like rabbits" type livebearer in there along with maybe some dwarf crays and have a safe live food source.

Yeah... I thought he'd recovered from the initial shock. He was not transported in ideal conditions. I guess he just never recovered as much as I had thought.

Dang.

Thanks, guys. I had a bad feeling when I found out this guy just dumped them in tapwater. I couldn't understand why he didn't just put them in tank water. I thought I could get them back on my end in time to get them in good water, and they would not be worse for the wear.

Lesson learned. The hard way.

Did you lose all the fish that were in tap water or just the knifefish?
