Otopharynx lithobates Red Top

I picked up two bags of Otopharynx lithobates Red Top (a bag of 4 and a bag of 3) at this past CCA meeting. Both bags came from Jay. I've got the fish in a 33 long with some Chromogynos paralabidochromis right now.

So far, all still have their silver-with-spots color and markings, but lo-and-behold.....I come home this evening, and there's a female holding, and another (female, I'm assuming) that looks about ready to spawn!

So I guess my first question....are there any males in this group....has been answered.

But my other question is this. Is it common for them to spawn without a male in breeding dress?

[FONT=&quot]If there is a male in the group he will start to show some color, faint but you can probably tell if you look closely
Another thing, if it’s all females, Malawi Cichlids in my experience of keeping them will drop the eggs, pick them up and keep them for a few days then spit them out
I have a tank right now will all females Otter Point and Electric Blue Ahli and they both will carry unfertilized eggs.

I stood in front of the tank for a while watching everyone....and there's one that's more yellow on the underside....I'm betting that it's a male, but we'll see.

I was wondering about their tendency to carry unfertilized eggs. Good to know that it can happen sometimes. It's not a behavior that I've noticed in my Mbuna....but then, these are not Mbuna!

Come to think of it,I have only notice this behavior in my Peacocks and Haps also.

Great to hear they're not all girls. From looking at the bags during the auction, I was doubting it.

Oh son of a nutcracker!?! Christine puts a group of females to a tank and they spawn for her! We should start a second BAP for the rest of us... :angry:
