nightcrawlers from LFS and baitshops same?

I've been trying to find some nightcrawlers but petsmart never seems to have any in stock, so then I remembered a few 7-11, K-Mart, etc. carrying nightcrawlers for bait in the fishing departments.

Are they the same thing? bait vs. LFS pet food? I'm thinking they're the same but just wanted to be safe and ask.

Yep they should be the same. Here is a link for a place to buy red wigglers. Most larger cichlids and fish can eat these whole. They are like your regular garden worm. For smaller fish I chop the H**L outta them with a razor blade.
www.unclejimsworms.com 500 delivered to your door for $25.00
1000 for $30.00 and 2000 for $40.00!!!!!!

Is there a difference between red wigglers and nightcrawlers? I was told there was and that some fish prefer one to the other...

I think Matt (dogofwar) got some worms from that guy. He keeps them in a big rubbermaid in his fishroom and feeds them compost.

Night crawlers are 5-10 times larger. Home worm farms use red wigglers, they are the the great composters. Night crawlers grow slow and don't breed as fast, so not as good of a choice for the hobbist.

Walmart has the best price on worms and most stock all year.

I used to get worms from Wal Mart till the last one were moldy, and once before they were a few rotten ones. Jim's worms are fresh. Nightcrawlers are HUGE. If you have 5" cichlids you can throw there worms in whole and they can take them. It may take awhile for them to process them in their pharangeal mill / jaw, but they will get there eventually. As far as Wal Marts price being cheaper, maybe in monetary outlay but not in quanity of product.

Red wigglers are smaller but will reproduce in captivity and eat your veggie kitchen waste

I got mine from an organic farmer in so Maryland but mine produce quite a few now. His price is similar to the unclejim place

pm me if you'd like me to get some worms from John - the farmer. I'd bet he'd hook us up for a big order

When ever I'd buy from walmart or 7-11 I'd always open the container in the store and finger through it, so I never had a problem - sometimes I'd have to go through 4-5 before I found one full of juicy healthy worms. I started a bin at home a year ago and never looked back.

I read a TFH comment from Jack Watley who said that after feeding worms purchased at a non-pet store, his discus turned brown to black and hung at the bottom for a while. When he inquired about the quality of the worms, the store stated that the soil includes a chemical to reduce mold in the container and that may have been the cause. Watley was recalling an earlier experirnce in his life and of course he is nowhere around here. All things considered, it would be safer to get the worms from a supplier, where you know exactly what is in the container.

Wow! What we would do for our fish. Grow our own worms. My wife is ok with bloodworms in the freezer, but she may draw the line at growing the worms in the house. :D The above post kinda answered my question, but anyone here feed worms to their dicuss? It would be a lot cheaper than buying frozen bloodworms for sure ....

Here you go - I got my red worms here and they arrived in great shape:

They also have nightcrawlers and other stuff so get what you want!

I actually ran across this site yesterday and love how they have different sizes of nightcrawlers. Picked up a pack of canadians at the LFS but the tub was labeled for fishing. Them suckers were huge, had to cut them up into 1" portions. The rays seems to like it. these dudes are slimier than red wigglers....

Very interesting about the chemicals to treat mold...

Thanks for all the input! I'm glad I asked!
