That is way too much. Try just giving them light from the time you get home to 9 pm or so. I think 4 or 5 hours will be better than 12+.

Low light plants only need 4 hours of photosynthesis, extra lighting is just bonus.
Unless you have high demand plants, add CO2 and fertilizer on a daily basis, you don't need 12 hours of light.
Get a timer, and turn on your lights at 6pm and turn them off at 10pm.
When you get rid of the algae, you can leave on your lights for 6 to 8 hours.
