Nannacara aureocephalus spawn

I have four "fry" that came from my original spawn back in the fall. I guess they're not fry anymore because this morning I found the largest female guarding eggs in the very same little flower pot she was hatched in. I also found the male chasing the other 2 females down trying to coerce them into producing some eggs, too.

So far, she's doing a good job of protecting them from the baby plecos growing out in that tank and the lone female Blue Badis. She's also doling out a beating to any ramshorn snails that get close.

Cool! Wish I knew how to get mine in the mood. What kind of music do you play to them?

Matt - both times I've had a spawn it's been in a dirty tank - 2+ weeks with no WC. I didn't get time to do that tank last weekend.

The like the little 1.5" diameter x 2" high flower pots I buy at Michael's crafts for $0.50 or so a piece better than caves. These pots are just big enough to fit a female.

It is likely that I was feeding some blackworms both times I've had a spawn. I know I fed blackworms yesterday morning. I don't recall about last time. I keep them in tap water. I'm not sure of the pH of this tank, but I think last time it was around 7.2-7.6. I'll check later tonight.

The temp is between 76 and 80. Some days I remember to feed them, some days I don't. They get a mix of different varieties of Ken's flakes (color, immune, black worm) and grindal worms fairly regularly. They occasionally get red wigglers when I feel like digging them out and black worms when I have them. Once every 1-2 weeks, they might get some leftover frozen shrimp (brine and mysis) and daphnia from when I'm feeding my puffers.

There's lots of leaf litter and ratty old java fern in their tank. There are also some alder cones. It's well filtered - an AC30 HOB and a 5" sponge.

I really feel like these guys spawn when you neglect them a little.
