The first few spawns are usually unsuccessful. Rare is the pair that get it right the first time.
I usually remove the spawning slate a few hours after they stop and place it in a hatch out tank with a sponge filter. I usually add Meth Blue or acriflavine and when they go to wiggler stage, change out the water (I do it via my central system, you would have to do small changes) since they can move were fungus to overtake the infertile eggs.
