Medication Recommendations

i really wouldn't buy all of those medications unless you ar eplanning on bringing in wild caught fish. The problem is they all have a shelf life and you can end up wasting alot of money. I would keep an antibiotic, and an anti-parasitic as well as salt. Those would at the very list buy you time to go buy what you need at a local fish store. I never use mela or pima, they seem more supportive than actual meds but i know alot of people like them. I tend to stick with the idea that more frequent water changes cures most things that they treat.

As for the anti-parasitics, I prefer praziquantel as its easier for hte fish to absorb. Metro is great if ingested, but can be more difficult to get effective through bathes.

Here is a good disease link if you want to read through it and make your own opinions on what meds to keep on hand: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/topic_fish_diseases

I had had the maracyns on hand for 2 years and never had to use them. Ended up throwing them away. I have only had to really use meds since I started bringing in wild fish.

Most important thing you could do to protect your fish is make sure you have a good qt tank. This protects your existing stock and enables for easier treatment as the qt is usually a smaller tank and requires less medication. I qt for one month of health.

Thanks so much to everyone for their suggestions. Did a bit of comparing products and came up with the following shopping cart list:

-Melafix/Pimafix - Gonna go pick up some bay oil (Pimafix) and tea tree oil (Melafix) and attempt to DIY. They run $35/gallon at Foster and Smith and figured I could save a bunch by making my own.
-Metronidazole tablets (parasites)
-Prazipro/liquid praziquantel (parasites)
-Clout (parasites)
-Jungle Parasite Clear (parasites)
-Stress Zyme (bacterial repopulator)
-erythromyacin tabs (I have already tetracycline tabs - is this about the same?)

Ok... so I think that some of the parasite treatments are redundant, no? Or are they for different types of parasites?

Dang... that's a big shopping cart.

Tony, you will NEVER need a gallon of Melafix or Pimafix...LOL, so I say no need to buy all of that. I have a small bottle of each and rarely ever use it.
Metro you will need.
PraziPro or Jungle Parasite...not both.
No need for Clout if you are getting the others.
No need for erythromyacin.
No need for Stress Zyme.

Awesome. Thanks Bill. That simplifies things a whole lot. Making a (much cheaper) order this afternoon.

Thanks for everybody's input on this thread. It really does show how knowledgeable and helpful the members of this club really are.

Cheers!

Good choices Tony...

I only have metro. most of the time.... salt and melafix. Prazi as well.... but I don't feel the need to stock it as it is readily available.

Metro in powder form on the other hand is somtimes hard to come by... so make sure you always have it. Powder form is the best way to use it... and the most effective.
