help w/ tank overhaul...

"Punks" are Neolamprologus caudopunctatus.

Plants in a Tang tank are a tricky thing, but it can be done. You just need to choose hardwater-loving species (such as Vals).

On the pelvicachromis, if they breed, the harmony in a 20 gallon tank might be tested. They can be pretty aggressive in protecting fry and sometimes one of the parents will attack the other.

They are cool fish, however. Our speaker next month has a wide variety on his list.

Goodeids (in my very limited experience keeping them) are like giant guppies on PCP.

I hope in the near future to have some to share/sell, but I recently got some African killis (Lampricthys tanganicanus) from a member of the Greater Seattle Aquarium Society (GSAS) when I was out in Seattle last week. I got some eggs and some of them are starting to hatch. Hopefully, I will be successful in breeding them.

They do well in planted tanks.

I'm looking at grabbing some wild type bettas from Jeff Michels when he comes down. They'd be fine in a 20 planted community tank.

who sells WCM minnows on the forum? contemplating on your suggestion of a badis or those minnows for the aquascape.. how big do glass cats get?

I think Batfish Aquatics has them sometimes (Josh/JLW). I got mine from Tropical Lagoon and have seen them fairly frequently at PetSmart in Germantown. Glass cats get about 3" - mid to upper level swimmers.

Also, there are tons of fish that will look tiny in a 20H -

Checkerboard Cichlids (Jeff Michels has both species)
Rasboras (copper, harlequin, micro, etc.)
Celestial Pearl Danios (Batfish)
Gold tetras
Pygmy Sparkling Gouramis (Batfish)
Dwarf cory cats
Pygmy Ottos
Pea puffers (also AWESOME for snail control, but will eat your shrimp)
A wide array of gobies
Some varieties of loach are also small
Any variety of Badis

A 20H is pretty limited with regard to cichlids (at least long term). I don't like to keep pairs of cons, Cryptoheros or the like in a 2' tank (at least without a divider handy) - too much chance of the female getting offed...

I don't want folks to get the impression that goodeids are bad fish to keep. Just the contrary.

Goodeids run the spectrum from mean as heck (e.g. Ilyodon) to really peaceful (e.g. Chaplicthys, Xenoteca, Atenaeobus toweri) and somewhere in between (e.g. Ameca, Goodea, Chracodon).

As mean as they are to other fish (and I keep mine with medium-sized CA cichlids grow outs), Ilyodon (furcidens, xantusi, whitei, etc.) are relatively peaceful with each other and almost never eat their fry. I had a 2'x2'x1' dedicated to them at one time... started with 2 pairs and had bunches after a few months. I added some 2-3" ones to a big tank of mbuna and they dominated the top layer of the tank.
