Has anybody notcied an increase in fish prices

A Florida newspaper has reported that the number of fish being sold in this country from Asia is about 65%.
A couple of points:
Lonnie, I guess I wouldn't use the word "great" to describe the list unless I was talking about the sheer number of Africans that have been coming out of Asia. IMO (Read: MY opinion) the Africans coming out of Asia are junk, sometimes being prepped for this country artificially.
Lfs need our support, but sorry I will not support any that buy their Africans from Asia.
All of us have the means to buy fish from some great sponsors that this site and other sites have. We also have the means to buy some absolutely beautiful fish that each one of us are breeding.

Many Florida fish farms have lost anywhere from 70-90% of their stock. We can only speculate when, how long and IF this will drive up prices at our lfs. Some Florida fish farms have reverted to buy new stock from Asia, and maybe this will not drive up prices as much.

Great post Bill, I agree 100%. I only have one good fish shop near me (that I've found). It's in Hancock MD and is a small mom and pop shop. I don't buy cichlids there as I buy all my cichlids from reputable breeders/importers. I do however support that little fish shop by purchasing dry goods as well as giving them some fry. I don't ask for store credit but I'm not taking them a bunch of fry either. The fish I've got aren't available in any shops locally, so I figure if I give them a few they are getting something that nobody else around the area has to offer. I don't know where they get their fish from, but from talking to them and hanging out there I'm positive that they are good people and I want to see them stay in business. Once I get my fishroom completely set up, I plan to give them a stocklist with very low wholesale prices. I'm not looking to make money off the shop, but to help them even further. I wish there was more that I could do to help them, but when it comes to buying fish I'm sticking with reputable breeders and importers... they need our support too and I don't have to worry about wether or not the fish is the real deal. :angel2:

He is from Russia although I am not convinced that his fish come from Russia. We do not remove the names from our boxes. The majority of our suppliers only deal with stores.

He does provide a great service for shops. The shop I worked in in York three years ago used to get elephant nose, black ghost knives etc. from him. The prices were great and the quality was good as well. I was always under the impression he was of Russian decent. Nice guy.

When your store get fish in from other suppliers, do you cut the names off the box?
