This quote should be printed on laminated index cards and handed out with every fish purchase at the big box pet stores... but then again, if they did that, they wouldnt be able to sell miracle ich cures.. would they...

Just add an extra airstone or air-driven filter to up the oxygen in the tank when raising the temp...

Matt

Added a powerhead and opened the vinturi. Could add a second (unfortunately missing the parts for the vinturi) if needed.

Wow. That is really weird. I will have to check my temperature thermometer strips. I promise you guys that I really did just raise the temp until it wouldn't go any higher. Maybe....... Maybe I should get some real thermometers instead of strips.....

Rainbows and high temps

The rainbow cichlids actually look more stressed than just about any other fish in the tank :(
That's very surprising, since they experience wild swings in temperature and other conditions in the wild.

The male has been staying hunkered down near the bottom. He looks pretty darn grumpy. I suppose it could be the salt rather than the heat. He has fewer spots than the female who seems to be handling it better. Whatever is going on, it's not enough to stifle his appetite - piggy.

We've hit around 85 and added an additional heater to try to get it up further. The whole basement is warm from the tank, but the tank isn't warm enough yet. We've got 2 digital thermometers (one on the end, one in the middle) and one traditional thermometer on the other end. Cory cats still seem to be handling everything OK.

I think he'll be fine. See linked article.

"The same abilities that allow this species to prosper in highly eutrophic habitats in nature also allow it to shrug off a good deal of accidental mismanagement in captivity. This is not to say that the basic principles of good cichlid keeping should not be applied to this species. Like other abuse-resistant species, the rainbow cichlid does much better and certainly shows up more satisfactorily when housed under suitable conditions. A temperature range of 21°-25°C. suffices for ordinary maintenance, with a rise to 30°C. advisable for breeding. Dropping the temperature gradually down to 23°C. once the fry are mobile will reduce the likelihood of precocious respawning and its attendant complications, a contingency to which this species is otherwise quite susceptible in captivity (Baylis, 1974; Loiselle, 1982b). So long as obvious extremes in either direction are avoided, Herotilapia is indifferent to pH and hardness."
