I used silk plants for years, no worries. The wire inside will eventually rust, but it never seemed to cause any problems. Compared to the cost of artificial aquarium plants there's no contest. Silk plants are great for simply providing cover or sight breaks. Not exactly show tank material, but they'll serve the purpose.
