Cyprichromis leptosoma Utinta spawn!

As I mentioned in another thread, I had a holding Cyp Utinta female (Esther, you were spot-on when you picked her out for me, thank you!).

I put her into a hang-on basket inside the tank to keep an eye on her last weekend since I also have some Altos and other Tangs in the tank that would love to eat a baby Cyp.

Tonight I noticed that she spit 5 little cutie Cyps. She was stressing about being in the basket, so I've returned her to the tank and will keep the little guys in the basket for a bit.

You'll probably notice how old this thread is. Well the original batch of fry didn't make it and they haven't spawned since. My colony has dwindled to 2M and 2F. This week two females spawned! So here's hoping for success with these awesome Cyps!

I have them in a lightly stocked 40B with some Aulonacara and a few tangs.

Those fish can be delicate or really tough. My best luck has been isolating the females after about 2 weeks. they will eat while holding also. Let them spit naturally.
GOOD LUCK.

exactly what I was planning to do! I'm going to put both females in a dimly lit tank by themselves to just chill till they're ready to spit.

Is there anything not spawning for you Christine? :D

Do your Untinitas have the yellow tails?

Utintas come with either yellow or blue tails. You'll normally see a group of them with both types. I read an article on the genetics of blue vs. yellow tails and I can't recall the details of the gene dominance (or codominance), but the females are also genetically either yellow or blue tailed but since they aren't expressing those colors, you don't really know the ratio of yellow vs blue in your population without doing a lot of focused breeding (and why bother since they're found like this naturally anyhow).
