Cryptoheros septemfasciatus spawn

I've been growing out some Cryptoheros septemfasciatus that I picked up in a CCA auction from Jon. Plus, Matt gave me some of his as well that are catching up to Jon's in size.

I've got them all crammed into a 20L with some catfish and a ton of driftwood on the top shelf of one of my tank racks. I mostly leave them alone since they've been growing out and I don't mess with them much other than to do waterchanges and to throw some food at them.

Well, I noticed that most of the fish are now hanging out at the front of the tank, especially on one side (unusual for them to linger out in the open).

So, I took a good look at the tank and I see the largest two from Jon's batch guarding some fry. One has the classic Cryptoheros "I'm spawning" mask on it's face, too.

I'll get some pics posted up as soon as I can get a clear view of the fry.

Excellent - they're good parents (which can be tough on their tankmates)...

"Real" C. septemfasciatum (and C. myrnae) with real provenance had been missing from the hobby for many years. Jeff Rapps brought back limited numbers of wild fish a couple of years ago. These are offspring from those.

Awesome to see that they're taking root :)

That's great! Good luck with them. From what I read, you might want to move the non-spawning fish out of the tank promptly!

My pair has gotten along very well (knock on wood) and actually allows about a half dozen of their offspring to cohabitate in a 20 long tank. The juvies are pushing 1" now.

Glad you've been able to keep these going!
