I never know for sure, but Juan Miguel still has them listed under cryptoheros, so I follow his lead.

You're absolutely correct :)

It's kind of interesting what Juan's done on CRC, though. The Amatitlania genus came about as a result of:

Schmitter-Soto, Juan Jacobo. 2007. "A systematic revision of the genus Archocentrus (Perciformes: Cichlidae), with the description of two new genera and six new species". Zootaxa. n. 1603, pp. 1-78 (crc01457) (abstract)

But Juan's applied the "new" species names from this paper to Cryptoheros (the prior Genus for "convicts").

And in his comments for C. nigrofasciatus, he says:

Comments: With the establishment of the genus Amatitlania by Juan Jacobo Schmitter-Soto (2007) three more related species were described out of populations of Cryptoheros nigrofasciatus. These new species have adjacent distributions (one is found in Lake Coatepeque in El Salvador). In face of the high variation of all Central American cichlids (particularly those found in several drainages and large distribution areas) in my opinion those new species with diagnosis supported in what I consider small differences should only be considered geographical variations on the fish.

"Convicts" have been through a long and winding taxonomic road but had always been one species (nigrofasciatus, - um, -a):

Heros nigrofasciatus, Günther, 1867, original combination.
Astronotus (Astronotus) nigrofasciatus, Eigenmann, 1893, new combination.
Cichlasoma (Archocentrus) nigrofasciatum, Jordan et al, 1896, new combination.
Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum, Jordan et al, 1898, new combination.
Astronotus nigrofasciatus, Eigenmann et al, 1903, new combination.
Cichlosoma nigrofasciatum, Regan, 1905, erroneous spelling.
Archocentrus nigrofasciatus, Jordan et al, 1930, new combination.
Cryptoheros nigrofasciatus, Allgayer, 2001, new combination.
Amatitlania nigrofasciata, Schmitter-Soto, 2007, new combination

The above paper broke them into four species (nigrofasciata, kanna, cotepeque, siquia).

I wonder if it's following "the rules" to take part of the paper (4 species) but reject the new Genus name?

As an aside, Dr. Michi Tobler from Texas A&M would be an awesome speaker as he's done field work on Cryptoheros and did a great presentation at the ACA convention a couple of years ago...

PS The Cubayo cons are awesome fish and only get better with age!

Cryptoheros coatepeque fry

I managed to save this batch of coatepeque fry. There are probably around 30 little ones growing out in their own 10 gallon tank.

Pulled a batch of cryptoheros kanna this morning. I'll get pics when they get a little bigger.

Sarah - please don't forget points for the coatepeque sold in the January auction.

I lost all the kanna fry in moving around tanks because of the soaked carpet.

Good news is that my paratheraps sp. fenestratus catemaco spawned on Friday night. The were still sitting on the eggs last night and I expect a pile of wigglers tonight when I get home.

Paratheraps cf. fenestratus catemaco

Here are some pics of the swarm with their parents. I pulled some fry when they first hatched and I'm raising them separately. Interestingly (and I guess not surprisingly due to temperature differences) the ones I pulled have not yet gone free swimming. I would guess the container I have them in is at least 8 degrees cooler than the parent's tank.

Xystichromis sp. Kyoga Flameback

I stripped a female of about 20 fry this morning. I'm pretty stoked about this spawn, as it is the first mouthbrooder that I've spawned. Fingers crossed that I can grow out the fry.

The catemacos are doing well, but growing slow. Probably won't be until the fall until they are ready to go to the auction. The Kyogas are doing well. I stripped another female, but lost most of the fry to my ineptitude with the new breeder box I'm using.

I was luck enough to catch my yellow labs spawning this afternoon. It didn't take long either. Just picked them up in the auction at the meeting last week. I know they are way easy to spawn, but its the first mbuna I've ever spawned.

Here's a quick update:

Photo 1 - paratheraps sp. catemaco
Photo 2 - labidochromis caeruleus - yellow labs
Photo 3 - kyoga flamebacks. One of the little males is already starting to color up.
