Cichlids with sunken in stomachs

Several fish in my 220 gallon tank with Malawi Haps, Peacocks, and Mbuna have sunken in stomachs. I have seen very small clear like worms floating in the tank. I'm aware of a parasitic worm of some sort in the tank, probably has been there since this past December. So here is a list of what I've done so far:

ARG Metronidazole- Treated two separate times for 7 days each time

Quick Cure

Tetra Parasite Guard- Treated once and then a second time after 48 hours.

Prazi Pro- Treated once

Kens Medicated Metro Flake Food- Fed for 9 days twice a day

Needless to say I have been spending a lot of money on medications because I have elected to treat the entire 220 gallon tank to try and eliminate the problem all together. I am slowly becoming more and more frustrated and have really started running out options. I was hoping someone with success in treating internal parasites and worms could maybe give me some advice.....

Thanks, I will give it a shot. When I spoke with Ken from kensfish he recommended the Tetra Parasite Guard. I haven't seen success treating with the parasite guard as of yet. Do you know which of the two you would use between levamasole or flubendozole and where can I buy it? I really appreciate the insight!

Unfortunately Tetra will not reveal the ingredients in Parasite Guard so there's no way of knowing what's in it or how much.

I treated with parasite guard roughly 10 days ago. I still see worms but I'm not really sure if they're dead or not. I will wait another 10 days and if my cichlids stomachs are still sunken in I can give Levamisole a try. Hopefully inkmkrs, com will have it in stock, looks like its been a while since they updated there inventory.

I appreciate all the help guys! I will be super careful in the future with introducing new fish into my tanks.

What would I do without my local fish club!

I am glad you post this
i lost a few fish in the past and could never figure out how to treat them

No problem, I've talked to so many people who have told me there fish have had this. Most people tell me they had to start all over cause they could not cure it. Seems like once a fish has a sunken in belly many other fish follow suit. I don't know if I will be successful in treating my stocked 220, but one things for sure I will try everything possible before I start all over.

I'm going to give the tetra parasite guard about 10 more days to run it's course, if that doesn't work I have one other treatment plan recommended by fellow CCA members to try.

There are articles about that product being used for aquaria, including reef tanks so it must be ok. I don't know the concentration though.

I am not so sure that sunken stomach is result of worms. Sign of worms usually is fish getting skinny and not sunken stomach. I am not saying you don't have worm issues. What I am saying is that sunken stomach may not be because of the worms. In the past, I've gotten fish with severely sunken stomach. I fed the fish well and the fish no longer had sunken stomach issues. In my opinion, not feeding the fish enough food can result in sunken stomach.

If you need a dewormer, you can try deworming flakes from here.

Good luck! If you need dewormers, I do have some prazi-pro and powder levamisole.

Neither Metronidazole nor praziquantel treat worms. You need levamasole or flubendozole.

I believe prazi treat tapeworms.

usually fish don't recover from sunken belly. At least, I have never cured it. And, I've spent hundreds of dollars on fish meds trying to save stuff. Now they go into the freezer to end their suffering
