BAP spawn Cryptoheros coatepeque

I had put an extra pair of these Convicts into a temporary tank since they were getting beaten up by another pair of Coatepeques in my 45. While in their temporary tank, they spawned. I've been having fun watching them take care of their fry, which always seem to have full little bellies.

I've been trying to give them some of the really small size Golden Pearls. Their fat little bellies generally have a yellow/orange tint, so I'm assuming that they're eating it.

I saw mom stirring up the gravel to help feed them yesterday (I'm guessing that's what she was doing) which seemed like a pretty awesome behavior!

Ok, this is my first attempt at posting video so I apologize if it doesn't work, or if it sucks!

Congrats on the spawn. Awesome to hear that you are keeping them around in the hobby. You just don't see coatepeques.

I've seen females do the behavior you are talking about. I think it is a combination of both keeping the fry close and stirring up some detritus for the fry to feed on.

That's shimmy is something that I haven't seen either (in other cons).

The females do more of a flick with their heads to notify the babies to stay close. The shimmy looks like feeding behavior. Perhaps Lago Coatepeque has silty stuff on the bottom...

Cool!

I've seen the head flick in several of my other dwarf cichlids, too.

Everything in the tank is covered in fluff stirred up from the bottom because she keeps doing it....but the babies are fat and happy so I can't really complain. :)
