One thing I have found helpful on Nitrite especially is to do a mix of tank and tapwater (I have a true graduated pippette which helps with this) and try to get the mix to have a lower Nitrite (0.25 or 0.5 ppm which I find easier to read) then just multiply to get the true tank water result.

This also works when your readings are off the scale...

Just make your weekly water changes, do not super overstock your tank and super over feed your fish you should not have any problem. Unless your water from the tap comes bad. What i do is before i do water change i check my tap water color and smell. Lol. It sounds stupid but it has worked me for years! Never had any problem with my african cichlids.

We don't do much regular testing, but being able to test when setting up a new tank or after some problem is very helpful.
