I love Serpaes, IMO, a very under rated tetra. I have some that are so bright, some days they have a purple hue. I have a (failing) NPT with banded rainbows and serpaes, I like the fish combo very much.

serpaes have a rep for being nippy and among the more aggressive tetras. I've not had any direct experience.

I've never had a problem with them. I even have a female betta in the tank with them, her fins are all fine. Not saying they can't be nippy, just saying not my experience.

So its possible a serpae tetra can "out-aggressive" a rainbow cichlid? Wow. Tiger Barbs also have a rep for being a bit nippy, though, these type of fish seem to tend to keep it among themselves when they are in a large enough group... ime, anyway.

Hmmm.... Well, I'll give it a go. Fortunately, both serpae and tiger barbs come cheap enough that if it didn't work out beause of that, they'd be easy enough to part with.

If you're not yet committed to serpaes, you might consider black phantoms or von rios. Both would be nice with rainbows. Good luck. Hope they arrive in good shape.

Oh, the von rios are nice! I remember having this tetra a few years ago, I think under the name "flame" tetra, and I recall kinda struggling with keeping them alive though. I am tempted.

Whatever I'm doing, I plan to pick up the tetra or barb of choice on Saturday... soooo... we'll see how it shakes out.

Thanks, Jon! Found one, and will be picking her up at the January meeting! Now, I just gotta hope they like each other!
