Ancistrus super reds.....take two....or three...

These guys spawned again. Of all of my Ancistrus, these have been some of the most difficult. They spawn far less frequently, fry have a lower survival rate, and the fry grow much slower. Let's see how this batch does!

I'm not even going to leave them in this breeder box.....I've found that they don't do as well in them. I put them in here just for the pic. They'll get their own tank very soon.

I have actually had pretty good luck raising them to a decent size in a breeder box. I don't know that wood is a requirement, but having hiding places(even just one small cave) seemed to improve the survival/growth.

I normally leave them with the pair, Ive had pretty good luck with leaving them but i might try separating since thats how everyone else is doing it.

I've gotten broods of close to a hundred and I just leave them in with the parents.

i would assume that wood (or leaf litter, filter squeezings) would provide grazeable mulm that would help in the survival rate.

Yep, the super reds just grow so much slower than the other Ancistrus. It takes them a lot longer to get out of the "uber fragile baby" phase.
