It depends on the variety. With some the males are blue and the females are orange. However if the males are also orange, you will have to go by the eggs spots on the anal fin.

If you have orange males, they may be lighter/paler than the females once they reach a few inches in size. May not be the case for generations a long way from wild, but has held true in some colonies I've seen.

The most reliable way is to vent them. Egg spots seem to correlate to dominance, but my most dominant couple of females have as many or more egg spots than my subdominant male. Behavioral approaches are also unreliable, as my females are much more likely to fight one another than the boys are; the boys have their hierarchy 100% clear and don't mess with it.

If you send me a fish porn picture of what it looks like when you flip them over... probably reasonably. Just from looking at the fish as it swims around in the tank... probably 50/50. ;)

I have a 4 inch male red zebra that needs a new home. He keeps trying to spawn with my yelllow lab which throws off the balance of my tank

When we had Red Zebras and Yellow Labs together they hybridized extensively. These are two species I would never try to keep together - the yellow labs are just going to be a mess.

I agree with WendyFish..

My male is lighter orange and has a really nice hue of light blue flash. It's pretty sweet. The female is the same size but brighter orange. My male tends to show dominance with the female but doesn't harass her.

Go figure.. someone wants to breed em and I want mine to stop. Sad thing is that my wife won't let me seperate the pair. So far 4 fry made it in a large tank with large fish..
