Thanks I think Josh is going to get some for me. I'm going to get 6 and let them pair off. I wonder if a 36x12 is enough space for more then one pair long term or if I should move the other four once they pair?

Move the others once they pair or keep a divider in the tank.

I've found that these guys (and other, similar fish) need an external threat to keep from knocking each other off. I usually keep a 3rd wheel either behind a divider or in a net breeder to make the pair feel like there is a threat...keeps the female from getting pounded...
