Where to find discus

Im going to be setting up a Discus tank (45 gal) in a month or so, after i build my pond and move my koi out. Im looking at getting 2 discus for the tank 3-4" and turning it into a planted type community tank. not overly planted though.

Anyhow, Ive seen some bad looking discus around, other places have some nice ones but cost more than diamonds.

But Im looking for a good deal on "decent" discus to say the least. Some good quality, but not bank breaking. Its my first Discus try so i dont wanna cry if "something" happens to them as to my inexperience.

well i was looking at his website, he has fish on there for like $200+ for one fish. Anyone buy from him just like say, smaller, more general discus?

PM Discus Hans! You should visit but plan on 4 or 5 fish. He usually has some good prices on small discus. I got 6 from him last Aug for a 55 gal tank and they are now big and Beautiful! If you love fish, you'll be please with his fish. You owe it to yourself.

Those $200 fish are dinner-plate sized (and jaw-droppingly gorgeous!). For 3-4" fish, I seem to recall his prices being more in the $40-50 range, though my memory might be off a little bit, so PM him to make an appointment, see them in person. And plan on getting at least four, maybe five, for a 45 gallon, then you'll have a decent chance at least two of them will pair off.

Another plus about getting Discus from Hans is that they are already acclimated to Baltimore City water, so none of that "you must keep them at pH 6.0" nonsense.

IMHO, you can either save $10.00 and buy some import discus that will most likely breakdown on you and then spend $25.00 on medication and lose them anyway. Or buy the best discus available in the US from Hans.
You only get what you pay for. Once you get to his place and see his stock, you will totally understand what we are talking about.

This picture if it works taken by Bill Barbito at the American Cichlids Association 2009 Convention tells the whole story when it comes to the quality of Hans's discus.

well i def know about discus hans, i've known about him even before moving to the east coast. I'll ask him what he can do for me when i get closer. I have a couple months.

You guys think a 45 is big enough for 4 discus? Thats why i was just pondering 2 discus because i don't want to overstock the tank. I will have some rams and neons/tetras in there also, even though, the more discus the better they are.

so if I say "Discus Hans", would that be being repetitive? LOL...

He has all size discus. If you pm him with an email address, he will email you a price list for all of his different sized discus.

I'll be visiting his facility in the VERY near future... can hardly wait!

Good luck!

I have read 10 gallons per Discus is plenty. Many people crowd them more than that but either have lots of filtration or many water changes. If you go a bit easy on the Rams and tetras I think you will be fine.

I would be remiss if I didn't put in a vote for Hans. His prices are not cheap but they are fair. Try him.

I know he doesn't like to do retail anymore but if you are a CCA member (should be if you aren't) he can be accomodating.
