Where do you get your eggs

Okay, in the past I have purchased Brine shrimp eggs online.
The last time I ordered a case of 12 1lb cans. That was several years ago.
They were from Brine Shrimp Direct and cost around $20.00 each for a high percentage. Like 85 or 90%
Now I look and they are over $39.00 a can.

Where do you get yours.
Now that I have turned on my baby factory, I need some more. Down to about 1/2 can.

I buy the 80% hatch from Brine Shrimp Direct. I used to get the 90% - 95% and then once I ordered the 80% to see what the difference was. I saw no difference and I have been buy the 80% ever since. I also use instant ocean sea salt for hatching. BSD has the 80% for $28.95/can

The club needs to make a bulk buy and sell them to the members at cost - that's what we do at the killie clubs.

Thats what I wanted to do but then I saw the price.
I don't check often enough, does the price vary based on the time of year? They can only harvest at certain times I would think. Hard to do when covered with snow. lol

The cost of the eggs is based on the harvest itself. It is quite interesting. Here are some sites that talk about the harvest of the eggs. The better the harvest, the cheaper the eggs.

Shrimp eggs from China are less expensive. I have heard that the naupulii are also smaller than the BS that come out of the US lakes. It can be tricky getting them through customs because some customs agents think shrimp - oh the kind we eat - and the rules of importing sea food products for human consumption are pretty stringent, and they refuse them. I have heard of people getting the Chinese eggs into the country as long as they are marked "fish food". I never attempted bringing in a case because I was always affraid they would go bad before I used them all. In that case the cheap price just wouldn't be worth it.
Here is a link to the many companies from China

Pat, maybe it would be a good idea to contact Brine Shrimp Direct and see what a case would cost, and see if 2 cases would be even better. I know that Jehmco will give a generous discount on cases as well.
I believe that is where the killifish clubs get them. He has a 16oz can of 90% hatch listed for $49.00. Jehmco's web address is www.jehmco.com.

I got a 15oz can of 90% hatch from Foster and Smith for $40 a few months ago. It seemed like a good deal and I figured I could store it in the fridge and have BBS for a long time. If I was going through multiple cans, I would have shopped it a bit more.

How long can you expect it to last in the fridge? Should I put them in the freezer? I don't go through them all that fast.

Thanks guys

Lonnie, I have an email in to them. Have not heard back yet.
I did contact them last year about a club buy and they would not lower the price.
Will try again.

When I was doing a lot of breeding, I would go through a can in about a month. Thats why I bought a case the one time. Used to get it from NABS. They went out of business or got bought out one or the other. They were cheap and good results.

As to keeping them....every thing I see says 40degrees. But I have had the can I am working on open for 3 or 4 years and did not refrig it.
Was in my basement right outside the fish room. They may not be hatching at 90% but still a good hatch. I probably could get it up higher if I used the right amount of salt but have never measured. I just throw a little in. Probably not enough. lol
I also have started doing like Frank suggested and I put in a few drops of bleach at the beginning.

To help kill any bacteria and help soften the eggs.
Just a few drops.
Gone by the time they start hatching.

At one point I was having a Hydra problem using the NABS. Never had that problem with BSD but hopeing that would help prevent it also.

It helps with decapsulating the shell and used for sanitary purposes. If you were lessoning Tony  you would have remembered Franks joke about the seagull poop lol. Just joking Tony lol.:D

BS eggs don't need to be refrigerated if the can is sealed. Once opened, it's actually moisture that kills the cysts. Refrigerate to keep the moisture down. Don't take them out of the freezer until you are ready to put the eggs in the hatching solution, then quickly add the eggs and put the rest back in the freezer. If your eggs do not have any clumps in them, they should give you a decent hatch.

I will find out where we get our BS eggs from at the killie club. We probably haven't ordered in a while. I know one guy buys his own cases from Sanders.

Thanks, I still have a couple weeks or so before i start getting low.
And I have an older can somewhere from the NABS days but was hoping not to have to use them because of the Hydra problem.

I still need to do some checking.
I read that there was a drought this year so that kept the crop of eggs down - driving the price up.

Will try to get to soon and do some research.

Here's one deal I have found:

A case (12) of 1 pound bags for $420 (that's $35/lb). Free shipping. I may be able to get a lower price for a larger quantity. I assume they are vaccuum packed bags. I will find out. These are Premium Grade-95% hatch.

The KKG gets their from Brine Shrimp Direct - a small discount for case quantity and another small discount for club. It's been over a year since we've gotten them, so I am sure the price has changed a bit.

On the hydra issue. I was told by an old friend that hydra can come from re-using your hatching water over and over. Also, if you don't clean the hatching container after each hatch it can contribute to the hydra problem, that pink grunge that accululates on the hatching container. Knock on wood, I have never had hydra.

Could be. I am not sure, just that when I used Nabs it was there, when I switched to another brand, gone. You could be right. I just don't know. I sort of wondered if thats why they went out of business. lol
I will probably use that other can of NABS when I run out. too much money now not to use it. lol.
I use 2 litter bottles and one use them for two batches then go to another bottle. Plus with the bleach, I hope to help that problem. .
