What size pot?

Would like to give my Rainbow cichlids their own little 'love-nest'. They are in a 90g community tank with some big driftwood and rock, so I don't have room to put various size pots in there. With so many of you currently or previously breeding these, what size terrra cotta pot should I give them? Is a 4.25" be about right?

4.25" won't work. Only 3.7234". Just kidding ;)

As Jon said, whatever they can both fit into. I usually offer a few choices of whole and broken pots and flat surfaces for them to choose...

Mine prefer exposed slate

A sheltered smooth flat surface/stone should suffice - have a couple hundred fry as proof. :D

Everyone knows we need more rainbows, neh? Thing is I've never seem them anywhere but within CCA. Not online, not in an LFS, nowhere but on this forum and at our meetings/auctions.

They're great fish :)

Not to derail, but seems like a great fodder for a box swap with another club!

Mine have a large cichlid cave that they use....sometimes they spawn on it, sometimes in it, sometimes they ignore it and dig a pit. They're not so picky, I think.

Almos always, though, once the eggs hatch, mom moves them into the cave for a few days.

They kind of vanished from the hobby, but because they are so fecund, they do hae a habit of becoming incredibly numerous once one or two people start keeping and breeding them. :)

¿Como no?

A box swap seems like a fun idea!

I have a boatload of oblongums and H. guttatus ready now if you want to get started early and have some ideas. The rainbows and Nics are weeks away from being ready but will happily offer those as well when the time comes provided it involves receiving something other than chanchitos. :D

To eat or as friends?

I am talking about a pair of dwarf rainbows with some guppies. Are they compatible with Kribensis and Guppies?

Rainbow cichlids (Herotilapia Multispinosa) and kribensis together can be touchy if both are breeding. I once had a pair of each protecting fry. The other tank inhabitants were terrified. I wouldn't keep them together in anything smaller than a 55. Even then, it would be a little tense.

Rainbows can coexist with guppies, but if they're guarding fry the guppies will be forced to the top of the tank and will benefit from a lot of plant cover.

Rainbows don't need pots to breed. As Sam wrote, a flat stone will do.

I've got about 40 rainbow fry growing out right now. I think they're at the stage where their survival is pretty certain, but they won't be big enough to sell/trade until May.
