A few people asked what I do when I'm not in my fish room, I'm a musician and music teacher.

Here's a photo a recent gig - Carnegie Hall, NYC

1st picture: section shot, I'm a bassoonist, it's the wooden tube like instrument that projects above my head (center left)

Second picture: group shot, Carnegie stage.

That's really awesome!!! The group picture brings back memories for me, I had the great privilege of singing in "THE" Hall as part of a concert choir while in highschool. Just standing on stage raises goose bumps, when the sound starts flowing through out the hall it's absolutely amazing. Congrats on being able to perform on such a stage ;)

I'm impressed. I played the violin 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Nothing like on the scale you perform but anyone who has performed in an orchestra at any level knows what a thrill it is. In "THE HALL" though, WOW.

Dude! Extremely awesome.

The bassoon is a crazy instrument. I used to play saxophone, clarinet and a bit of flute (*insert Asian joke here*), but those pesky double-reed instruments just confuse me, lol.

You da man! :happy0144:

Another interesting fact is I was a Jazz Major, bassoon is really not considered a "JAZZ" instrument. I also play sax, flute and clarinet...oboe baffels me though.

No way.
I played bassoon for years, and actually got full scholarship offers to a couple of schools for it. NOBODY plays the bassoon! I haven't played in years, but have been thinking about picking it up again lately. Now I know who to go to ;)

Way cool. Thanks for sharing. Susan (a PVAS member) plays oboe for the Gainesville Orchestra (IIRC). I can honestly say I've never run into another bassoonist outside of the music world in any of my other hobbies.

My wife is a Bassoonist as well. It was her major instrument in college. She switched from sax in high school.

Very cool, Ben! For some reason, I've always been drawn to instruments in lower registers. Cello, bassoon, French horn, bass and the foot pedals of the pipe organ all make some of my favorite sounds. Lower registers just seem to have "more power" (insert Tim Allen "Tool Time" grunts here).

And Jen, lots of people play bassoon! :) My wife's grad school advisor's husband was a bassoonist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. When we traveled to Pittsburgh for her Masters thesis defense, we stayed with her advisor, and I got to hear him practice, and he showed me a little bit about how he makes his own reeds. Pretty neat stuff (for a music geek like me, anyway).
