Water softener pillows?

Has anyone ever tried these? I was thinking of getting a couple for my 29 gallon - one to put in the filter and one to place in a bucket to prep water for changes.

They seem like an affordable alternative to an RO unit when dealing with smaller tanks.

I've tried them, but I found that they lost their effectiveness very quickly. Mine never recharged even close to how they were when they were new.

Did you add yours to the filter of your tank, or just let it sit in the tank?

In other news - the house we're buying has copper pipes... I wonder if that will kill my shrimp.

We have copper pipes and my shrimp are just fine, as you know. I don't think there is much leaching from copper.

Good to know , especially since the 10 blue pearls I got from Arlene have turned into more like 30, or 50... I have no idea... they're everywhere.

I tried them in the canister filter, and also tried them in front of the filter output in the tank.

Maybe I'll try it for now and see what the water is like at the new place. I'm planning to set up a rain barrel there, so hopefully we won't need the softener packets long term. It would just be nice to see a D. mac spawn make it.

Probably can find a used RO unit pretty cheap. I know AF2 is coming up and I am selling a bunch of stuff I do not use.
