Uv sterilizer

Does the uv sterilizer kill beneficial bacteria? And does it help prevent Malawi bloat. ( aka bloating )

I recall reading that uv doesn't kill but mutates dna and prevents reproduction. If it impacts algae and ick, I would think it impacts any microorganism in the water column that passes by the uv light.
