was looking at one of my tanks and saw the hydor 100W heater had some junk on it, i took it outta the tank to wipe it off with a paper towel, but when i touched it with my palm it was blazing hot. i don't recall any of my other heaters ever being this hot. i'm thinking i should just get rid of it and get a new one.
any thoughts?

It was probably on when you pulled it out, if they are on they do get extremely hot when not submerged in water. Thats why they explode if you dont unplug them when you do a large water change. Thats also why manufacturer warranties do not cover glass breakage, thats the number one cause of heater returns. What it all comes down to is if your uncomfortable go ahead and replace it, after all you can never be too careful but IMO your fine.

with all the cooked fish threads w/marineland recall and whatnot its easy to be paranoid. did you check to see if your tank was hot? those suckers do get really hot if left out of water but it takes a few minutes to heat up that much. was it super hot right out of the water? on the one hand its best to be safe on the other submersible heaters aren't cheap.

the heater was on when i took it out of the tank to wipe it off. it was only out for a few seconds before i touched it. i've never touched any of the heaters while they were on, so i wasn't sure how hot they got. i swapped heaters, just in case. will see if the new one in there gets as hot. it just surprised me how hot it was....if a fish touched it they'd be cooked onto it. eck!
