Thoracochromis brauschi spawn

I stripped two holding female Thoracochromis brauschi (Lac Fwa Bloodthroats) on July 29th, eggs from both looked like they were developmentally the same so I put them both in the same tumbler together.

I had been keeping the group in regular, dechlorinated tap water. This was the group I got from Esther not too long ago.

I was amazed at how many eggs each female was holding.

Woooohoooo! Congrats! Glad to see they are doing their thing.
You might soon be over run with babies as they were very prolific breeders.
I still miss the big guy. Is he the daddy?
Do you have pics of their tank? Just curious what you have done.

Well done, Christine!

What's your set-up for them? I found mine to be pretty rough on each other.

Big daddy is in a quarantine tank being treated for an infection. My suspicion is that he got too stressed after spawning with his girls and furiously defending his territory. So he's in time-out for the moment. I originally had them in with a mix of cichlids in the 100 gallon tank, but they've been moved to a 75 with some mbuna.

Esther, what pH did you keep them at? I've read that the pH from their natural water is high, but in captivity, male-heavy broods are observed at high pH.

I'd say my pH was somewhere in the 7.4-7.6 range.
I was never able to determine the M to F ratio on the numerous spawns I had, although I suspect they were male-heavy. I always tried to keep the smallest of a batch in reserve in the hopes that they might turn out to be F. Worked a few times.
I never had the space to do a study on pH vs. sex of fry and never read anything that gave a definite answer to that question...

Looks like a bunch, how many?? Just sort of wondering if there is a usual (or max) number of fry from mouth brooders. I have seen 26 from one females mbuna. Such a small mouth seemingly.

I've had 1-1.5" females Vics (I know there aren't Vics :) ) spit upwards of 30 fry... and some of the larger Barombi-Mbo fish spit < 20 for 5" mature fish... and female Mossambique Tilapia at 5-6" spit several hundred.
