Interesting article on how scientists have discovered that one form of bacteria can complete both steps of the nitrification process. Previously, it was thought that it took two types of bacteria.
Although the research was conducted by the microbiology department, the bacteria came from aquarium filters in a different department:

Interestingly, the article does not mention archaea, which another study found to be principally responsible for nitrification in aquarium filters.
