The Fridge

Anyone have any opinion on him getting the boot? I for one am angry as hell that they are forcing him out. How are you going to fire the ACC coach of the year who led his team to a bowl game. And on top of that take him away from a promising team with a great young QB and one of the best receivers maryland has seen in a while (Torrey Smith). Any opinions?

I don't follow Maryland as closely as I did, but it seems like a bad move to me. I think I read somewhere that the replacement will likely be the jerk from Texas Tech.

Even if Fridge is not at the top of his game, he still got them to a bowl. Before Fridge Maryland football was a disaster.

THEY ARE LOOKING TOWARDS A SLIMMER MODEL ONE MORE STREAMLINED LIKE A ATHELETE AND NOT THE MICHELIN MAN. WHO KNOWS W/ MD MAN THEY HAVENT HAD A STRONG SPORTS PROGRAM IN YEARS. I PERSONALLY THINK THEY COULD DO A BETTER JOB OF GETTING OUR IN STATE TALENT. MAYBE ITS THE LACK OF STATE OF THE ART FACILITIES THAT RECRUITS ARENT WANTING TO COME TO MD I DUNNO. FIRING RIGHT BEFORE A BOWL GAME MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE. TALK ABOUT A DISTRACTION GEEZ! THIS WAS SOMETHING YOU DO AT THE END OF THE SEASON. THEY ARE STARTING TO ACT LIKE DAN SNYDER! STUPID!

Lol! Yeah we need to get the instate talent and we dont. Md isnt the best at recruiting and we just lost James Franklin who was the only person doing anything when it comes to recruiting.

And on top of that O'Brien is talking about transferring now because the only two coaches that he was close to was Franklin and Friedgen. And if we lose our young QB maryland is going to be in bad shape. I think they are doing a great job of messing things up. I almost wish that if we were getting rid of Friedgen we would give the job to James Franklin.

I agree that Fridge got the shaft. I think they could have handled it much better, even if Franklin bolted to Vandy. The other thing playing in the background is the dude who started Under Armor is boys with Mike Leach, and with UA being a huge UMD booster it was hard to ignore him.

I will say that I am intrigued with Leach as a head coach. It would be awesome to see the Terps put up 50 a game in Leach's offense.

The Fridge couldn't take Maryland to the next level. This is a coaching upgrade. It wasn't good how they got rid of him before his contract was up but Leach wouldn't have been there next year, and the Fridge can buy a Freezer with the buy out deal; he isn't crying.

Oh yeah next year watch out for a Freshman running back named Terrence West. He is going to make Leach look like a guru.

The Fridge was dead when Franklin left. As someone noted Franklin did all the recruiting. Fridge is a lousey recruiter. Franklin is also taking all the best assistant coaches with him. It could have been done better but it was time for Fridge to go. It also looks like they tried to do it discreetly but Fridge forced them to fire him the way they did. He just wouldn't play along.

I for one am excited about Leech (most likely) coming over. I follow all the Texas teams and he did a great job at Tech. He was able to recruit some good talent in a state that gets recruited heavily by many school (look at all the Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana etc rosters. So hopefully he can do a better job keeping talent in state. Don't forget the UA partnership helps. While everyone loves the fridge you just have to admit he was never taking UMD anywhere further then the here you go pat on the back bowl games. Instant success? No. But I'm a lot more optimistic about the future with Leech.

Was the incident that lead to Leach's firing isolated or was it the worst of a general pattern of behavior towards players?

My guess is that Leach is tough on his players but the incident got blown out of proportion because the kid's dad was on ESPN. I played football through high school and college and sometimes coaches need to be a$$holes. He will get kids that want to play for him.

Seeing as Bobby Knight is his boy im going to go with the latter lol but nothings been proven and its all stuck somewhere in the legal system so time will tell. Im pretty sure hes not worring about it though. Like mentioned above Adam James has been known to be a cry baby and having his dad Craig work for ESPN helps blow things out of porportion.

Now I wonder how many people will suddenly change their mind when they see his offense firing away.

I AGREE I RESPECTED, ADORED AND FEARED ALL MY COACHES BECAUSE I KNEW WHAT THEY WERE TRYING TO ACHEIVE FOR THE TEAM AND TO MAKE ME A BETTER PLAYER. WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT THEY ARE LIKE THE DRILL INSTRUCTOR/ UNCLE THAT WILL AND CAN BREAK YOU AND TURN YOU INTO A BETTER PERSON. ONE THING I CAN REMEMBER AS WELL IS ALL THE THINGS MY COACHES SAID AND TAUGHT ME THAT BENEFITTED ME LATER IN LIFE.;)

I will! If we are winning then Im a happy camper. And I agree that coaches need to be tough on their players. I never played football but I wrestled through high school and the wrestling coach was also the football coach and we all feared and respect him and it drove the athletes to to well. Isnt there a saying that goes something like winning has 100 fathers but losing is an orphan. If we start to win the fridge will be forgotten.
