Synos and Fish (not) Breeding

Synos and Fish Breeding

I saw Sarah mention it on Mike's troph thread, but didn't want to jack it....

I have never had syno cats in with my African community tanks. I've always admired them in other folk's tanks, but never pulled the trigger. Something to do with long term investment.... I never did the research to make sure I got the right one. Similar to the plecos that have lived in my tanks over the years, you will have that one fish and watch him grow and he will be the only one in the tank, so you better pick the right one from the start. Anyway, I digress.

The other day, I won a small decorus syno at the ECC auction and am getting an angelicus from Matt. The decorus is small and in a 40B with some growout peacocks right now. He will go into the 150 when that gets set up, along with my smaller haps, some random mbuna and single male peacocks. The angelicus will go into the 180 with the big boys.

Sarah mentioned that her trophs did not want to breed in the presence of a syno. Is this true across the board with all Africans? Experience?

I've had a syno eupterus in my big tank for a while and had fish breed successfully in that time. Then againm it were only mbuna breeding and some people say they will breed in a bag with enough space. It might be species or genus specific, maybe the less bold species are too shy to spawn around the bottom dwelling catfish.

I've heard/read that frontosa will actually stop spawning if Synodontis multi's come to the party, but most species aren't bothered by their presence unless they've lost multiple spawns to the catfish fry.
I keep a group of multi's and a single eupterus in a 75 with peacocks, and haven't seen any problems. No peacock fry either, but that's not too surprising with the other cichlids (oblongum pair recently moved out, now 4 red severums and a single ruby green male) sharing the tank.

In nature syn multis pretty much rely on cichlids to breed in order to reproduce themselves.

I wouldn't worry about a cat or three in a big tank..
