Suitable for shrimp tank

I have set up a 20L for RCS and nano-sized fish. Shrimp not in there as a food source per say, I want both fish AND shrimp to thrive. I don't mind if the teenie-weenie shrimp get eaten, just want a population that can survive and maintain itself with an occasional addition of adults. I currently have a small group of chili rasboros in with the shrimp, planning to add a few more to get the group up to 12-15. What I'm after is one or two more nano-sizes fish of another species that won't gobble up the shrimp. I'm hoping Rachel will weigh in on this one. SHOUT OUT TO RACHEL!!!:D Anyone else with this set-up, I'd like to hear from you. Many thanks

I have that book Shawn. It doesn't say specifically for each species if they prey on shrimp. Almost all are listed as carnivore and/or omnivore. Oh, and, GET BACK TO YOUR STUDENTS!!! I'm off today, not you!:D

Eques Pencilfish, Chocolate Gouramis (have itty-bitty mouths), Badis badis, Dario dario, Dario hysignon (Darios and Badis will eat the itsy bitsy ones, but in a well planted tank they won't get them all), pygmy sparkling gouramis, probably licorice gouramis, too.

Java ricefish might also work well and I've done white cloud mountain minnows with shrimp, too.

I've currently got some blue pearl shrimp in with my Aspidoras and they seem to all get along well. The Aspis might munch baby shrimp, but again, lots of plant coverage.

Thanks Becca. I have just planted the tank, so it's a bit sparse rigght now. Hoping to pick up some plants at the meeting this weekend. What floating plants do well in moderate light?

Floating plants? Most of them... they are right there on top, right under the light.

My guys seem to really enjoy subwassertang, java moss, and guppy grass.

I have some that is riddled with algae from growing outside... shrimp love algae (this particular algae seems to need bright light to run amok)... PM me if you'd like some to try.

I also have 3 pygmy sparkling gouramis - again, PM if interested.

I've kept RCS with Celestial Pearl Danios for years and, more recently, Rosy Dwarf Loaches (which are collected in the same areas as the CPDs). The RCS do well. It's possible that some baby shrimp get eaten, but I don't think it can be that many. Having plants helps quite a bit, I think.

I got both my CPDs and the dwarf loaches from Rachel, by the way. I think Josh may carry them, too.

I second the CPDs - I had some in with my shrimp and they didn't touch them - they're a gorgeous fish and Rachel usually has them.

Good idea, Shawn! How do you feel about taking the lead on the GB?

Barry, sorry to derail your thread.

Now, back to the topic....

You're forgiven Jon. Yes, the Nano Aquaria book is a good one. I also just ordered Mike Hellweg's book Culturing Live Food. But when Shawn organizes that group buy, I'm in!

Sounds like an opportunity for a poo boy member, like myself, to contribute in a positive way to this club that has given me so much. :D

I'll talk to you about the detail on Saturday. :happy0180:

Barry, sorry to derail your thread. Again ;)
