I only have one class on Thursday so I use it to catch up on homework and waterchanges. Today I did a big waterchange on my growout tank that had a couple Tangs between 1.5 and 2.5 inches and two larger guys from my main tank I was trying to fatten up. The largest of the tangs was just about ready to join the main tank.
Well the other day, apparently my landlord had his worker come by and do some maintanance around the house. He asked by housemate for a bucket of water. My friend gave him one of my fish buckets (which wouldn't have been bad if he was actually using it for just water). I believe the guy was cleaning some stuff and added bleach to the bucket.
Well, needless to say, today did not fare well with the growout tank. I did the water change and noticed that one of the little guys was struggling so I put him in a breeder cage. About 20 mins later I found his brother (who was about half an inch larger and much healthier) dead on the bottom. Also, the lelupi was looking toubled and it wasn't long before he was gone too.
Before I knew what had happened I was down to the two guys from the main tank I was trying to fatten up and the largest tang. I moved them immediately to the clean (I hope) water of the main tank. I put the tang in the breeder cage but he started seizing and rolling. He was obviously not going to make it so I had to pin the second fish ever to end his suffering (it's very hard to do).
Right now the Pundamilia pundamilia and jacobs peacock are cowering in a corner and breathing heavy. They may have been burned by whatever was sticking to the bucket. I don't think there's anything else I can do. Hopefully they will pull through. :/
This has not been a fun time...it's one of the consequences for living in a run down house with 7 other college guys
Lessons Learned: Be sure to keep close tabs on your water changing equipment. Do not mix cleaning agents and fish (intentionally or not). Don't get lackadaisical with your routine.
