I nominate myself as an early candidate for the 2011 Boy, You Sure Are Stupid Award. Here is why I should be nominated:
I was repackaging the fish food I got at the meeting last night. I tend to take it out of the plastic bags, and put them labelled tupperware containers. I was having a glass of wine while I was doing this. I then broke Rule No. 1, of my Ten Fish Commandments in my house... DO NOT SIT CUPS AND OTHER ITEMS ON TOP OF MY TANKS. I sat my wine glass on top of the canopy, and continued putzing with the food. I got some residual flakes on my hand, and decided it I'd brush them in the tank as a late night treat for the fish. So what do I do? I open the canopy, knocking over the wine glass. Wine spills onto the canopy, and onto the power filter on the back. I panic and grab a rag and wipe it up, and remove the canopy and wipe around the power filter.
Then comes my award winning moment, where I earn my nomination.
My common sense spoke to me. I thought to myself... I said "Self, do a water change". Pretty simple.
But then my doofus sense spoke to me. I thought to myself... I said "Self, there wasn't that much wine in there, and you have new carbon in your filters. That small spill, large volume of water, carbon in the filters... don't overreact".
I listened to my doofus sense. Lights out, and to bed I went.
I woke up this morning and got dressed for work. As is my routine with my only tank light not currently on a timer, I come down the stairs, grab my jacket, and turn on my tank light before heading out the door.
OMG... the water... its CLOUDY. The fish... they're at the top, gasping the surface wataer for air. My blue diamond discus... he's dead! WHAT HAVE I DONE???
I immediately jump out my work clothes and tell my boss I will be late, and then I do a large water change, and change out all the filter media in one filter. I sit back and observe for an hour. Everyone is now back to normal. Swimming around, being their usual self, no more gasping or lethargic behavior.
I deserve to win this award because I should have done the water change last night, when the spill occurred. Instead, laziness cost me a discus, and caused me to be late for work.
Lesson... harshly... painfully... but duly... learned.
