I was wondering if those heavy duty rubbermaid stock ponds where good to keep fish in, I thought just to save money on glass and all.

Yep, so long as you don't mind not having a great view of your fish. They are PERFECT for fish that are prettiest from above... Rays, for instance.

Like the others before me have said, the Rubbermaid stock tanks are perfect for fish. Both former aquarium stores that I worked at used them for this purpose.

You can get them at most farm supply stores (Tractor Supply, Southern States, etc.) There are also plenty of places that sell them on the internet, but you'll have to pay shipping on those. Not sure if Home Depot or Lowes carries them or not.

For a top, I've seen people build a screen out of wood and chicken wire. Not real pretty, but effective. If you are going to keep the tubs outside, this also doubles as a way to keep birds out.

There was a post on here about a 180g set-up + 3 stock tanks + chiller and a bunch of other stuff...for $300...but in NJ.

I've used stock tanks for water storage and housing fish. They're great because they're already plumbed with a 1 1/4" drain...

In California, I kept a giant African Lungfish in one and a big ornate bichir in another. Also kept breeding groups of Haps and other African cichlids...

I just covered mine with a piece of styro for insulation...

We are in the process of moving houses and ideally would like to get our fish out of our current house.

I wonder if people think we could keep Mbuna and Tropheus in these outside (in a relatively but not completely shaded area) for say a month and half (rest of August and into Sept)?

I was thinking I could cover them with eggcrate to keep birds and such out. Any other thoughts if they get rained on would they be ok? I could probably rig some rain cover if needed.

Sure - no reason at all other than it's going to start getting a little chilly at night.

Like I posted, they have a drain on the side near the bottom, so doing water changes is super easy. I'd keep egg crate over it during the day and styro at night (to keep in the heat). Float a heater (on a piece of styro) to keep the temps stable.

These are great for fish. I sold my 300g stock tank about a month ago. Wish i could've kept it. You can get them way cheap on craigslist if you can find one.

I would, if you're going to heat it. The purpose of the styro is to keep the heat from escaping through the top. The alternative is to spend more on electricity... or keep the tank at room temp.

I'd actually put a sheet under the stock tank as well.

if I keep it inside do I still need styro?
