So... Malawi, huh?

I've been mulling it over for a few days now, and I guess I'm getting close enough to possibly pulling the trigger on this idea, to go ahead and post. Wow... when I first joined this club, I was all into Tangs. Then, while being a member of this club, I rediscovered my love for New World cichlids. Now running two successful New World community tanks... one CA, one SA... I'm kinda thinking of doing one Old World tank, just to have a variety from both sides of the pond. Getting a SW tank recently has furthered this thought process, as I began thinking it would be cool to have something from each world... New World, Old World, and Salt!

So now, I am thinking of converting one of my 6 ft. 125s into a Malawi tank. I want lots of color and movement. Lots of pop, if you will. Nothing that gets larger than 8". All males, Haps and Peacocks... maybe some kinda Lab can work? Essentially, I want reds, blues, and yellows, with some white thrown... black too, if possible.

Okay... I have discussed this thought in the past 24 hours with Tony, and he has given me some very nice guidelines. Nonetheless, getting multiple opinions has proven valuable to me while in this club, and so I again solicit any and all thoughts from you guys. I think it's been nearly two years since I've kept Tangs. So, your input is certainly valuable.

Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

That's funny because your post has me considering starting a 10g or 20g FOWLR tank. I think I am one with Africans except for Bichirs.

Dude, I have learned a ridiculous amount of information in the last two weeks about saltwater tanks! Who knew Nemo will grow up to be so mean? And, might turn into a female???

(The folks on the saltie forums HATE when you call clownfish "Nemo"... LOL...)

@Rich it must be in the air in southern md lol I live in waldorf also. I am in the process of turning my 220 into a Malawi tank. I have been keeping flowerhorns, red devils and veija cichlids for about 15 years now and ready to get some africans again. Not downsizing just moving fish around :)

In terms of labs, yellow labs are the most common. However if you are keeping smaller fish, the clown lab(Labidochromis chimulsae) might work also. You probably would be able to have the labs breeding. Although to get any fry you would probably have to isolate or strip.

You can probably throw in a Vic cichlid or two also. Alot of the species have a black form. It also would give you something a little different.

If you want peacocks and Haps, you probably want to stick with more peaceful Haps.

Definitely gonna stick with peaceful haps... Tony gave me a great list of them to consider (holy cow... there are a LOT to choose from)! I think this will turn out pretty cool, really.

From what I'm understanding, if you do a "clown" tank... ESPECIALLY a maroon clown tank... your probably just gonna have that one pair. And if they mate, they may take over a huge part of the tank... on BIG tanks. Smaller tanks, the whole thing! LOL...

Dude... clowns are mean! LOL...

I'm gonna get one of the more common false percula(sp?)... might be false ocellarus... something like that. They are a lot less mean, and I can not worry about them attacking other fish!

LOL...

So then help a brotha out with a suggested stocklist! :D

Rich, there are numerous ways to go.
I think this might be the best way to start off...

Dave has one of the bigger lists around with pictures.

Why not look at the fish that you may feel would have the best eye-appeal to you, and then we can go on from there.

Just my 2 cents.

Rich, I have a 125 in my den with all Malawi and I think you will be making a good decision switching your 125 to a Malawi tank:D Here is my stock list of what i have in it.

Trio of Placidochromis SP. "Jalo"
17 yellow labs
5 Labidochromis SRT Hongi
5 Cyrtocara Moorri (blue dolphins)
4 Protomelas Stevenii Taiwan Reef albino
and 4 catfishes

This tank is really cool and have no aggression. The 3 hap species are so different in color and body shape that I can keep males and female groups and no worries about hybrids and the yellow labs and SRT Hongi also breed in this tank.

Tony is the man to get some great suggestions on a peacock and Hap tank. Hes got some of the best YOU TUBE video's that i have seen.:happy0144:

Weird. Anyway, that's the list of fish I like so far. And I hope to add some labs, if possible. Can this work? If get the above, how many labs... if any... can I add?

Thanks!
