The main method we sell the medication is in 10 gallon powder packets given it is common to quarantine the sick fish while treating it in a small tank, especially since medication can harm the biological filter of your main tank. The price you see for each type of medication is a FULL and complete course of treatment for 10 gallons of water (unless noted otherwise). Some medications require treatment every 24 hours for as much as two weeks; other medications require only a single dosage. Whether it takes 10 doses or one, the price you see above and below comes with everything you need to complete the entire course of treatment. If you are treating a larger tank, you need to buy an additional lot for every additional 10 gallons you are treating. For example, if you are treating 30 gallons of water, you would need three units of the medication. ALL medication we sell comes with a detailed set of instructions. The prices here are for CCA members only; we sell this medication for more in our online store and on eBay. If you would like to purchase a custom order or a larger quantity of medication, we can make a powder packet to treat anywhere from 2.5 gallons to 100+ gallons, and we sell medication in bulk from 10 grams up to 5 pounds. If you need any additional information, feel free to contact us at fishmeds@gmail.com and mention that you are a CCA member to receive the discounted price.
About Us...Fish Meds (fishmeds@gmail.com)
We offer help in diagnosing and treating sick fish. With that said, most of our hands on experience is with freshwater fish only, and everyone should have at least one or two books on diagnosing disease and recognizing ill health in fish as most causes of disease are environmentally related with incorrect/poor water quality being #1 and incorrect diet being #2. Because this is a forum of advanced hobbyist, it is unlikely members here have many runabouts with diseases from these causes, but disease can happen due to other reasons which the fishkeeper cannot control as well. Some example causes would be; if a fish dies in a heavily crowded/planted/cluttered, but healthy tank, if it is not noticed and other fish eat the dead fish, then infections can pass from the dead fish to otherwise healthy fish who had not been exposed to the bacteria before. Bacteria can come about in tap water including pseudomona and aeromona bacteria, which are the two most common bacterial infections to infect fish. Certain fish, ex: discus, are very prone to tap water problems where as other fish, ex: convicts, are not phased by it if they have a good environment otherwise. Parasites can develop suddenly in the event of stress from bullying or temperature changes and even with good quarantining practices, it is not always possible to completely avoid disease. Because of that, we sell medication which you will not find in pet stores. It is more effective than traditional treatments and is less stressful on the fish. We offer same day, competitively priced shipping and will send it through whichever service you prefer; local pickup is always welcome as well. I want to stress that the most important aspect of disease management is identifying the cause of ill health and correctly diagnosing the disease. An incorrect diagnosis can actually kill your fish by stressing it out more. Below you will find detailed information on the medications we sell. We sell these medications in a variety of packaging means and are glad to offer custom orders as well as bulk discounts.
DETAILED MEDICATION INFORMATION
ANTIBIOTICS/ANTIBACTERIALS
- Doxycycline Hydrochloride-$4.50
- Doxycycline is a oxytetracycline derived antibiotic with very wide spectrum activity and little resistance. Doxycycline treats both gram negative and positive bacteria, including fin and tail rot, mouth rot, sores, ulcers, septecemia, pseudomona and aeromona bacteria, and even some fungi. I have also used it to treat swim bladder disease successfully. It is much less stressful on fish than other antibiotics of similar capability.
- Doxycycline can be administered via bath or food. When administered via food, it is very effective for treating severe internal bacterial infections. Unlike tetracycline and oxytet, there is virtually no antibiotic resistance to doxycycline and doxy can be used in ALL pH levels and is not affected by light.
- Doxycycline, like tetracycline and oxytetracycline will completely fry your beneficial bacterial so if you must treat the entire tank, consider TMP Sulfa. If you are quarantining, this is my drug of choice for most common bacterial infections that affect fish.
- For resistant bacteria, doxycycline can be combined with kanamycin sulfate, each at full strength
- A full course of treatment with doxy is treating the infected fish for 8-10 days; 8 packets are included in each lot
- TMP Sulfa (Trimthoprim and Sulfathiazole Sulfa)-$5.75
- TMP Sulfa is a newer generation sulfa drug with better solubility, wider spectrum activity, and less resistance than traditional tripple sulfa
- TMP Sulfa treats essentially all the disease that doxycycline treats with the exception of fungi and some gram positive bacteria
- TMP Sulfa is one of the few effective antibiotics that will not kill all of your beneficial bacteria but it will make a dent in it
- TMP Sulfa is very easy on fish and can be used in the food while using a combo treatment such as Nitrofuracin Green in the water as a bath
- A full course of treatment is treating for 8-10 days; 8 packets are included in each lot.
- Kanamycin Sulfate-$4
- Kanamycin Sulfate is an antibiotic which treats gram negative bacteria including fin rot, tail rot, septecemia, as well as fish tuberculosis (AKA Wasting's Disease)
- Kanamycin is not affected by pH and is the ideal treatment for marine aquariums
- It is also good for prehistoric fish and the ideal antibiotic for betas
- A full course of treatment is treating for 8-10 days; 30 days for fish TB; 8 packets are included in each lot
- Gentamycin Sulfate-$1.25
- Gentamycin Sulfate is probably the strongest antibacterial in existence. It is a stronger version of Kanamycin sulfate and is designed for resistant gram negative bacteria, including septicemia, fin and tail rot, and to bacteria in which other antibiotics fail
- Gentamycin Sulfate carries a high level of toxicity on the kidneys and is ideal as a last resort antibiotic
- A full course of treatment is defined as treating once and leaving in the water for one week; if needed, repeat the process a second time; 2 packets are included in each lot
- Erythromycin-$4
- Erythromycin is a narrow spectrum antibiotic which works best on gram positive bacteria and certain fungi and mold; it works on gram negative bacteria but not nearly as well as other antibiotics
- Erythromycin treats swim bladder disease, red slime disease, many fungi, black mold, and some fin/tail rot although it is not the ideal treatment as fin/tail rot is a gram negative bacteria
- Nitrofurazone-$2
- Nitrofurazone is a wide spectrum, furan based antibiotic which treats gram negative and some positive bacteria. It is most commonly used for heater burn, physical damage, and fin and tail rot
- Nitrofurazone can be combined with Kanamycin sulfate for resistant bacteria
- Nitrofurazone is the primary ingredient in Nitrofuracin Green, which is better for physical damage and heater burn as it has a few extra ingredients to act as a secondary infection preventive
- A full course of treatment is treating for 8-10 days; 8 packets are included in each lot
- Tetracycline-$3
- Tetracycline is an older, wide spectrum antibacterial which treats gram negative and positive bacteria; it treats similar bacteria to that of Doxycycline
- Tetracycline will not work in water with a pH which is over 7.5, can be inactivated by light, and will destroy all beneficial bacteria
- There is considerable amounts of bacteria which are antibiotic resistant to tetracycline and because of this and its functional limitations, we strongly recommend Doxycycline instead of tetracycline
- A full course of treatment is at least 8-10 days, sometimes as much as two plus weeks
- Oxytetracycline/Neomycin Combination-See Koi Fix
- De-Los (Dylox 80)-$1.50
- De Los is probably the strongest external antiparasitic available to the hobbyist. It will kill virtually all external parasites including worms, snails, lice, flukes, and more in tropical, marine and pond environments. It will also kill parasite eggs. It is toxic to prehistoric fishes, sharks, and invertebrates
- De Los is for the most part harmless to anaerobic bacteria
- A full course of De-Los is defined as treating once a week for three to four weeks; each lot includes four powder packets
- Quinine Sulfate-$1
- Quinine sulfate is a antiparastic which kills ich, velvet, protozoans, sliminess of the skin, Rams Disease, and hexamita. It will kill even the most resistant strands of ich and velvet which are malachite green/formalin resistant.
- Quinine sulfate is safe for almost all fish, including scaleless fish such as loaches, plecos and sharks; it is also safe for the biological filter
- Quinine sulfate kills the ich parasite while it is still attached to the fish; all other treatments only kill ich in the free swimming stage
- A full course of treatment is defined as treating once every 3-5 days, for a total of up to 10 days of treatment; each lot includes two powder packets
- Metronidazole-$4.25
- Metronidazole is an antiprotozoan which treats hexamita (hole in the head), chilodonell (sliminess of the skin), Malawi bloat and epistylis in pond fish. It will also treat freshwater ich although quinine sulfate is the preferred drug for treating ich
- Metronidazole is safe for the biological filter
- A full course of treatment is treating 8-10 days; each lot includes 8 powder packets
- Paracide-D (Internal)-$1 (Treats 3.5oz (100 grams) of frozen food)
- Paracide-D kills internal parasites and all worms including flatworms. It will also permanently eradicate camallanus worm when used in conjunction with De-Lost in the water
- A full course of treatment is defined as treating your fish’s food with the medication and feeding the treated food to the fish for 4-5 days; two packets are included in each lot which treat 25 grams of food each
- Paracide-X (Internal)-$1 (Treats 1.75oz (50 grams) of fish food, all types)
- Paracide-X is the exact same formula as Paracide-D, but it also has a laxative which can be used for constipated fish
- A full course of treatment is defined as treating your fish’s food with the medication and feeding the treated food to the fish for 4-5 days; one packet is included in each lot which treat 50 grams of food
- Praziquental-$1
- Praziquantel is an antiparastic which treats gill flukes, flatworms, and possibly fish heatworms. Praziquantel is the safest antiparasitc available and is safe for every fish. Unfortunately, its usage is very limited and many people often are misled to believe it cures certain parasites which it does not.
- Praziquantel is not very effective for killing: ich, velvet, camallanus worm, parasite eggs, most internal parasites, protozoans, slime disease, or hole in the head
- This medication MUST be dissolved in ethyl alcohol as it has virtually no water solubility
- A full course of treatment is defined as treat the tank once, leave the medication in the water for a week and repeat the process if necessary; each lot includes two powder packets
- Griseofulvin-$1
- Griseofulvin is an antifungal which eliminates all types of fungi found on fish (white, cottony growths)
- Griseofulvin does not contain any dyes or any formalin based products
- Griseofulvin is the only effective antifungal which will not harm the biological filter!
- A full course of treatment is treating one time and leaving the medication in the water for 7-10 days; each lot includes two powder packets
- Parinox-$1
- Parinox is a combination of TMP Sulfa, De-Los, Metronidazole, and sodium. It can be used as a general quarantine preventive but is designed to be used when fish begin to die for no reason. It is also good for angelfish and discus plague which are viral diseases, as it prevents the fish from getting a secondary infection. Parinox is excellent for treating viral diseases or when a confident diagnosis cannot be made. If a correct diagnosis can be made, it is strongly recommended that you change your treatment regimen to a more narrow spectrum treatment
- A full course of treatment is treating the water once a week for two weeks; each lot includes two powder packets
- Nitrofuracin Green-$3.75
- Nitrofuracin Green is a combination of Nitrofurazone, Furazolidone, a trace of Methelyne Blue, and sodium. It treats gram negative and positive bacterial infections, all external parasites, protozoans, some sporozoa, fungi, secondary infections, and is an antiviral. It is a fantastic healer for wounds, heater burn, physical damage, and especially ammonia burn. It also raises the dissolved oxygen level with the small amount of Meth Blue which is added.
- This is the best medication on the market for proactively treating new arrivals while in quarantine. Many recently transpoted fish have heater burn, ammonia burn, bacteria, or parasites. In the event of ammonia burn or parasites, these affect the gills which make it harder for the fish to breath. The Nitrofuracin Green increases your dissolved oxygen level and kills any disease they may have which allows your fish to breath easier while it is healing. This medication puts minimal strain on fish and cures almost every ailment recently transported fish are subjected to.
- Nitrofuracin Green is safe for almost all fish
- Nitrofuracin Green will damage at least some of the biological filter
- A full course of treatment is defined as treating for 8-10 days; 8 packets are included in each lot
- Koi Fix for Food-$7.50 (Each packet treats 1/4lb of food)
- Koi Fix for Food is a combination of Oxytetracycline and Neomycin sulfate. While it is marketed for Koi, it is a great medication for any fish displaying signs of serious bacterial infections which koi are prone to.
- This medication treats virtually all bacterial diseases and excels in treating advanced septicemia, fin and tail rot, hole in the side, mouth rot, ulcers, open sores, and infected wounds.
- It is strongly recommended that you use a secondary fungal preventive such as Forma Green, Nitrofuracin Green or Griseofulvin while using Koi Fix for Food
- A full course of treatment is feeding the fish the treated food for 10-14 days; each lot includes one packet which treats ¼ pound of food
- If your fish has stopped eating, use Koi Fix for Water or Doxycycline Hydrochloride as a bath
- Koi Fix for Water (each packet treats 25 gallons of water and NOT 10)-$4$
- Koi Fix for Water is a combination of Oxytetracycline, Neomycin sulfate and griseofulvin. While it is marketed for Koi, it is a great medication for any fish displaying signs of serious bacterial or fungal infections which koi are prone to. This medication treats all of the ailments that Koi Fix for Food treats, as well as fungi.
- DO NOT use an additional preventive such as Forma Green in combination with Koi Fix for Water; if you need to treat for parasites as well, use either De-Los, Quinine, Praziquental, or Metronidazole only
- A full course of treatment is defined as treating once a week for two weeks; each lot comes with two packets which treat 25 gallons of water each
- Forma-Green-20-(Each bottle treats 5,000 gallons once)
- Forma-Green is a malachite green and formalin combination designed to treat parasites, protozoa, fungi and act as a healing agent for massive aquariums and ponds
- For smaller tanks, Nitrofuracin Green is recommended in place of Forma-Green due to the antibacterial and lower toxicity level
- Forma-Green is VERY toxic and must be handled with care!!!
- Dosing varies depending on your individual application but each bottle will treat approximately 5,000 gallons of pond water once
