Steve Lundblad has been in the aquarium industry for over three decades. He is widely known as an Aulonocara expert and has maintained more than thirty species of Aulonocara for well over twenty years. He is one of the few that can easily tell the young female species apart. He has given many presentations to aquarium clubs across the nation and internationally and has received numerous awards for his breeding and conservation efforts. Recently, on his latest trip to Lake Malawi he assisted in the reintroduction of Pseudotropheus Saulosi to the Taiwan reef where the species is nearly gone due to the popularity in the aquarium hobby and overfishing.
As a young man, he decided to blend his hobbyist passion with an entrepreneurial dream and hasn’t looked back since. He has travelled to Malaysia, Singapore, Peru, Brazil, Mexico, and the tropics of the Amazon River. He has logged over eighty-five dives in Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika alone. His trips have increased his knowledge of fish by observing them in their natural habitat. His passion of aquatic life, belief in the power of small business, and his desire to share his appreciation for tropical fish culminated into over a thousand tanks, over twenty employees and two successful businesses. He operates The Cichlid Exchange Inc., a freshwater wholesale business that is going on 30 years of success. It is known for having quality fish and new and unusual species. Additionally, he owns the only specialty freshwater fish store in the country, The Wet Spot Tropical Fish. It is an expansive retail store that has been specializing in offering healthy, rare and obscure fish species for 15 years. It is easily the largest exclusively freshwater only store in the United States.
He is very active with the American Cichlid Association and has attended every convention since 1986. He has been on the Board of Trustees and is currently the Show Judging Chairman. He is also on the Board of Trustees with The Greater Portland Aquarium Society. He believes in promoting this amazing hobby by focusing on quality and healthy fish, which he firmly argues is based on traveling the globe to meet and build healthy relationships with suppliers.
